I am looking at buying a 1978 F-150 with a 300 (4.9) and the guy said it was a manual transmission with Reverse over twords the steering wheel and up. What kind of transmition is this?

I think they are just a 3 speed with no over drive, but I could be wrong.
1st gear is down twards you, 2nd up away from you, 3rd staight down form 2nd, and Reverse is twards you and up.
This is what I was thinking of, I don't know if there were any other trannys with shift on the colum, but some one might correct me.
if reverse is up and towards the driver, its a clark overdrive.
It a strong transmission that most people confuse with the later weak OD aluminum case transmission.
they have a slipyoke tailhousing like a auto (and use a auto transmission mount), but the tailhousing is cast iron.
Its a ford toploader case with 6 holes instead of 8 and a bulge in the passenger side to clear the OD gear. unmarked hurst shifter with a crome handle.
no creeper gear though.

Yep,that's what my 79 had in it orig. They were not a real strong trans.but the OD really helps MPG.We had 2 of them in the truck while my dad owned it(he bought it new) and we got probably 70-80k out of each one.The OD went out of both of them.
Thanks Guys, I bought the truck. It is a 3-speed with overdrive and a hurst shifter. I already bound up the shifter. It is a clark overdrive. The pickup rus and drives great. Thanks for all of your input.
