I am new here to the forums and you all seem very freindly. I have a pretty big dilemma on my hands here. I purchased a used '99 SD back in '02. It had 42,000 miles on it at the time and was in great shape. I opted for the v-10 instead of a deisel. It seemed like a good buy.
Well, to make a long story short, it seems that the previous owner may have run the engine low on oil for a time. I now have a 9200 pound paper weight in my driveway with a blown motor. ( rods are gone I think, 64000 miles ) Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have heard of anyone dropping an '05 motor in a '99 or newer. Just imagine those new 3v per cylinder heads compared to the old motors. ( me drools while thinking about it )
Any info. you guys have on making the swap work would be much appreciated. ( new wiring harness, computer, etc.? do the motor mounts even line up? those kinds of things )
Thanks in advance guys, I know you are all pretty knowledgable.
Bad thing is (I believe! You'll have to verify) your tranny won't bolt up the new 3V V10.
And heck...if yer gonna drop in a 3V you might as well drop in the TorqShift, too. But then you might as well get a new truck but then you might as well just find a V10 on the cheap, dial up Gale Banks and make it a real screaming 360HP MONSTER bu then, since it will be out of the truck and easy to work on, you might as well dial Kenne BEll and make it a 425HP-screaming-BSEG-getting-****-of-a-monster.
maybe he's got a point. who would think of a 05 3valve under the hood of a 99 esp with some of the above or something from ford racing like the the 3 valve huffer kit bolted on to it.
fun ended. save your coin and go for a 06. it has way to many better refinements that go with the motor to make the cost of a update into a older truck worth the labor.
I think I'd look at wrecking yards and find a used 2 valver out of a wreck to swap. Lots of 2 valvers out there, even in vans and motorhomes, and odds are good you can find one worth since all this craze about the 3 valver is out there. A new crate 3 valver probly will set ya back $8-9 g's, not counting labor.
I had one('99 2 valver) and really liked it. Some things like cable throttle control I like better!
Thanks guys, you all have been pretty helpful. I guess I'll go the cheap route and pick up a rebuilt motor from autozone for $2,700. I want to get away from the '99 motor still however. It makes 35 less hp than an '00 or '01 and a little less torque. I'm pretty sure that those motors bolt right in. I got a couple more questions now.
Does an '01 motor swap require anything more than a re-programmed ECU?
And who makes a better superchager system for these trucks? Whipple or Kenne-Belle?
I'm thinking that dropping in an '05 motor would indeed cost more than getting a rebuilt '01 and SC'ing it. It would also produce less power if my math skills are proficeint.
Not knowing much about Mod motors, I'll stick my neck out here:
Could you keep your existing block, get a new crank, rods, and pistons, and a set of 3 valve heads and bolt 'em on to the existing block? The drawback would be that you'd have to build it, but at least you'd know it was done right. I'm not sure I'd trust an Autozone rebuild.
check out this link almost brand new 2000 or 2001 v10 $2,995.00 www.karkraft.com and look at the left side for new engines almost at the bottom is the newer v10 listed complete with fi.
The thing with the 3-valve is, besides what Monsta said about the bellhousing being different (I've heard that too, before it was a reality, but haven't heard anything since).
The variable plenum thing, requires a computer that can control the butterfly between the two halves of the intake.
That means an '05-up computer (and harness to answer someone else). Unless you're going with a manual transmission, that AUTOMATICALLY requires the Torqshift behind it.
The '05 computer requires the ABS computer (or already has it inside of it vs. the '04-earlier ones that has a seperate ABS module). There's more to the '05 and up that involves upgraded communications with other parts of the vehicle, like the ABS and airbags, etc.
Unless you can hack the PCM, you're better off getting either the ENTIRE wiring harness and every piece of electronics you can from the '05, or get a '99/early-00 motor, bolt it up to your existing electronics and be done with it
While I fully intend to find a 3-valve motor eventually when my '01's dies, I do not suggest that approach for someone who uses their truck for "work" ...
