Cool Cleaning 5.4 L Engine made things worst

Guys, I need your help. I always clean my engine but this was my first for this 2000 F150 4WD, 5.4 L Engine. The engine was dirty and full of oil and grease. I wanted to clean the engine so I can keep an eye out for potential leaks. You can't find it if it is all over the place. So, like always, I used the decreaser and soaked the engine. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse with water. Right after that I started my engine to dry out the water. The engine was pretty rough. It felt like it was a misfire. I let it idle for 15 minutes with no improvements. My first thought was a wet distributer cap; no problem. I looked for it and I realized it doesn't have a distributer. Just electronic fuel injection. Ok this is new to me. So I took it to Auto zone and have them to pull the code because the "Service Engine Soon" lit up. Their reader said Engine 3, 4, 5 and 6 misfire. The manager at the store said that it means that the coil at each sparkplug station is blown perhaps from shorting out by hosing the engine down. Each coil cost 52 bucks. Before I fork over that much money, can any of you tell me he is full of it? I am going to try to dry out the connectors and see if that will take care of the problem.

By the way what does COP stand for? I believe it has something to do with the coils.

Any ideas and suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

COP stands for "coil on plug"- each spark plug has it's own coil directly on the plug.
I have never changed the plugs or removed the coils on our 5.4. Hopefully someone can advise you if you can remove them and dry them out.

Plugs Checked

I checked the plugs and they appeared dry. I find it is a difficult pill to swallow if half of the coils failed. It has to come from somewhere else like a common distribution center that may have gotten wet.

I appreciate spelling out the COP. That makes sense.

Thanks,

Cylinder order

Does anyone know the cylinder order on a 2000 F150 5.4L V8? I need to pull the coil off of cylinder 3, 4, 5 and 6 and check them out.

Running better after leaving truck overnight

The truck is running a lot better than it did yesterday. You know for the past several months, the truck has felt that it was hestitant so slightly that I wasn't sure if it was the truck bouncing along the road or it was a problem from under the hood. Since yesterday's event, it is more clear that the hestitant is more pronounced even now. My Dad told me that his truck 2002 F250 was doing the same thing and his was under warranty. He took it to the shop, they said he had two bad spark plugs.

Still having Problems

Ok, I know I haven't been here for a couple of weeks. Spent too much time at work....

Thanks to everyone for responding to my post. Thanks to Lxman for the cylendar order.

I learned that we should not wash our engines. I changed the spark plugs and #3 and #4 were rusted pretty bad. Water had found refuge in the bore and gave me a heck of a kick until the water dried out.

I am going to create another post. I have a problem with my engine and the problem doesn't correspond to this post.

Thanks,
Jim

The cops need the boots changed on them when you tune them up. I need to change mine before it fryes another COP.
