Injector pump adjustments

How do you adjust the amount of fuel the injector pump injects in to the cylinder? Have a F250 1994 7.3 IDI diesel with factory turbo. I had a article on this at one time and lost it. Any help would be appreciated.

I think you adjust the amount of fuel that the injector pump delivers. don't quote me on this but I think if you open the hood step up on the bumper lean over and look down on the pump you will see on the left side an arm this is the fuel adjustment. the adjustment is made inside the cab with a pedal on the floor it will be the one on the far right you can hear the adjustment real well wiht the engine running.

just kidding. I couldn't resist actually one of the reason I am looking right now is to get the same info. to adjust fuel pressure.

TX F250 please read the fine print re a pyrometer........increasing fuel can up the normal temps to piston melting temps........you don't want to go there....

pyrometer

What should the temperature run? Where do you take the temperture at or install the pyrometer meter sensor?

The best place to install a pyrometer is in the exhaust manifold.
Mine is in the rear of the drivers side manifold just above where the cross over pipe connects. There is plenty of room inside the pipe there for the thermocouple and this is about as close to the piston as you can get the probe.
The piston will start to melt at 1250 degrees, so I always keep mine under 1200 so there is a safety margin.
When you adjust the pump also pay close attention to small adjustments also.
Do you have any black smoke when at wide open throttle now?
If so you will only want maybe one flat of the allen screw. Two flats and it will look like a freight train.

A three inch turbo outlet and complete 3" exhaust would probably give you more power than the fuel pump adjustment will, and it will let a lot more heat out of the engine resulting in lower EGT's (exhaust gas temperatures).

Not trying to add more fuel. Trying to cut back get more MPG. Is there anything I need to be careful about when cut back and leaning out the fuel that injected into the each cylinder?

Much easier to only give it 1/4 throttle while driving it.
That way if you get in a position where you must have more power than that, all you have to do is mash the pedal.

to adjust the fuel take the triangle plate off the passenger side of IP. put a socket on the crankshaft pulley and turn it until you see the allenhead screw through the window in the ip behind the plate. Then stick a 5/32 allen in there and turn it to the right to increase the fuel. I turned mine up about a 1/4 turn and its just right. Not too hot but it will roll clouds out the stacks at full throttle.

I listened to the smart crackerheads in this forum and bought a pyrometer. Just put the probe in the driver side manifold, easy to get to. I put mine right where the gas blows out of the second cylinder from the front.
