electric fuel pump after mech. fuel pump?

i have a 89 7.3 idi, there is an electric fuel pump after my mechanical fuel pump? why? would make more sense to me if it was before the mechanical one but i dunno. i bought the truck already like this and was just wondering why. thanks!

ps thanks to you guys i fixed my surging problem, and you were right it was the mechanical pump that was bad. and i drove around like that for a year or so. now i get better fuel milage, no surging, and mo' powa!

if you are referring to the round piece on the fuel line that has a wire to it, that is not a pump but rather a heater for the fuel. It is mainly for winter operation. If there truthfully is an electric fuel pump after the mechanical, I would take it out.

why would you re move the pump after the mech pump?Befor would push fuel into the base if you had a leak in youg diaphram.

The best place for an electric is close to the tank, I have mine mounted right after the tank switch, and still run mechanical as well. If the mechanical pukes, I still have fuel. Also, makes short of opening the lines and pumping fuel back to the filter. No more long cranking to get the filter filled up again...
to mount the electric pump after the mechanical not only is inefficient but ineffective. If the mechanical fails, then the electric will draw only air. While the mechanical is still working, the electric is working to draw fuel through the mechanical pump. With the electric before the mechanical, it makes the mechanical more efficient in that it doesn't have to work so hard, and each push has more fuel packed into it.

i know that it did not come from the factory like so, it is an electric fuel pump, just a universal one, one inlet one outlet red+ and black- wire, one like i had on my 83 cutlass 350 rocket when i took OFF the mech. pump, i think i'll keep it but just move it back before the mech. pump since there is none in the tank, i thought i read before on this in this forum, maybe somewhere else, dunno, i just thought it was in a weird place and i guess it is...

well i removed the elec pump and everything is good and works, wierd but seems to me like i got just a tad more power with it on, however i am going to move it towards the rear of the truck just after the selector valve. thanks FTE members for your input.

Where is the selector valve on these trucks? is it towards the front by the engine or closer the the front fuel tank?
