Longevity?

Is there any reason to think the new SDs will not last 20+ years? I am specifically wondering if the current engines (5.4, V-10, PSD), all with more electronic components than your father's trucks, will last a couple of decades. There have been many posts indicating recent engines lasting for 200K+ miles, but I don't know if that translates to 200K+ miles over a twenty year time span.
Thanks in advance.

Any of these trucks will easily last that long if your willing to throw the time and money necessary into them. Basically if the frame and body mounts are good, everything else can be replaced/repaired/kept up, on a little by little, as needed basis.

I imagine most people would be sick of looking at the same truck for twenty years, and by that time there would probably be some younger guys running around who would like to buy one of those 20 year old SD's(they won't be building them like they used to - sound familiar? )

I'm with sinister73...

Along with my 02 SD, I've still got my 78 with 245k on it. Without a doubt, take care of it, and it will last.

Check out Big green in my gallery.

Yes, I too, think these trucks will last , if not in some type of misfortune (acc, etc)
I have my 99 SD but have 76 F-150 sitting in the garage, but it only has 42000 miles on it ..

It should. I am trading in my 1995 Aerostar 4L for a new F350 V10. That baby ran for 200K miles before it finally wore out (cracked head / rear axle leak). Used it for towing the family pop-up and a 3.5K Boy Scout Troop trailer. We just performed regular maintenance on it - oil changes, etc. You know it was not designed to be as tough as Super Dutys are! I expect my truck to last at least 10 years / 250K miles.

I must agree. I think the current crop of trucks will be very long lived.

I have a 01 Ranger XL - 2.5L I-4 with 70k on it, never a drop of trouble, ever!
I also have a 72 L700 24 ft rollback with a 361 XD gas V-8 and 5 + 2 with about 300k VERY hard miles, and it's never been apart.

The only thing that worries me is all the mud and road grim that gets into the door at the bottom. Have you ever noticed that? That is going to be a bad rust area down the road if not taken care of. I can work on engines, I can work on the suspension, there are lots of things I can work on, BUT rust isn't one of them.

Body rot has always been a problem no matter what you drive.

I worry about that too.

I think these trucks could last 20 years. EFI and a lot of the other electronic gizmos have been out for 20 years or more and lots of these vehicles are still going strong so I sure
hope our SDs will last too.

I have put over 150K on each of my last three vehicles (88 turbo cuope, 93 SHO and now my 99 superduty with 260K). It has been my experience that modern vehicles will go a lot of miles before dying if you maintain them properly (oil changes, proper fluid levels and filter changes are crucial!!!). However, time will slowly destroy seals, glued-on things such as moldings, etc., finishes, rubber and little things.

I am looking at a new 2005/2006 SD because the old one has been costing me a lot of money in accessory items, etc. this year. The blown-out spark plug last week broke the camel's back for me.

It may last 20 years with normal mileage but I'm up to 50 to 60K/year and it is becoming unreliable. It has been a great truck, though. Mine is a 5.4, auto and the electronics have been trouble-free. I'm losing mechanical items at a rapid rate.

my 2003 250 4x4 is almost dead with 40500 miles on it, oh the headaches, stalling, ball joints front brake rotors, leather seats, cd changer, air cond, stabilizer shock, oil leaks, bushings, ring gear on fly wheel, starter, hubs frozen, u joints, oh yeah BROKEN FLY WHEEL AT 35996 MILES(almost broke my key board typing that!) starting noises sounds like gasket? why me? ford has been nothing but un helpful they even let me pay for the tow $165 i though there was a 36,000 mile road side asst. program
