lifter?
it has a 351m.
My problem is that the engine ticks, at first I assumed that it was a stuck lifter, so I put in some marvel mistery oil. 1000 miles later and it still ticks, perhapes even a little worse. The sound comes from the rear of the engine just under the intake manifold. The sound goes away as the engine is reved. It is most prevelent at low idle.
before i bought the truck it sat in a garage for 11 years without running.
the ticking is driving me insane!!!
should I just keep waiting for it to go away or should I tear into the engine to find out what is going on?
could a damage rocker/bent pushrod cause this?
If I pull the valve covers after work, how do I spot the troubled area?
Thanks,
John

Would a lifter cause a ticking sound from the rockers or from the block? I figued that a rocker would be loud on one side, same for a pushrod. this sound is nearly centered.
Is there an easy way to unstick a lifter?
When you say "centered", Do you mean in the center of the block? Or is it definitely off to one side of the block? Is it truly a tick or is it a deeper sound than a tick?
Do you know what your oil pressure is?
How many miles are on this valve train?
Could you have an exhaust leak?
Could you have a bad cam bearing?
How soon after an oil change(miles) does the oil turn black?
Does your oil smell like gas?
Do you have oil in your air cleaner?
There are a few possibilities that can cause this problem.
What year is this truck?
Was it designed to run on unleaded gas?
A burned valve or valve seat can cause a serious tap.
Give me some info; I'll try again then.

the sound is definatly a tick, I had a 302 with rod knock
and the 302 in my other truck has wrist pin knock, so I know how those sounds (all too well, I really need to get around to puting my 351w in the 302's place)
well as I said above the truck has 40,000 miles on it and has never been messed with, I got it at an estate sale. the old man that bought it died in 1990 so the truck sat in the garage untill a few months ago when his wife died. (the truck looks like it came off the showroom floor)
Oil pressure is near the very top of the guage.
I have put 1200 miles on the truck and the oil still looks new.
it is an unleaded fuel engine since it is a 79'
no oil or gas anywhere other than where it should be.
thanks,
john
Does the motor backfire at all?
Sometime deposits can build up on a valve and cause it to not close all the way. This causes them to tick.
Have you tried putting anything in your fuel?
It probally won't do any good to replace rocker arms.
Lifters are your problem.
If you've got good oil pressure then all is well.

I did put some pb blaster fuel injector cleaner in the tank. (I know I don't have fuel injectors but that stuff really takes varnish off of anything)
Does this ticking do any damage if it is a lifter?
I really don't feel like replacing them but If I have to I will.
(it really would be a pain, I replaced manifolds on these engines before and they are heavy!)
I've never replaced lifters on an OHV engine before.
do they come out easy (assuming they aren't mushroomed)

They can be difficult. But I've got everyone out under the worst of conditions. I've had to grab them with vice-grips and work them out. That's not that unusual.
I've never replaced lifters without changing the cam. If the base circle is worn on the cam then the tap won't go away, I think?
Did you do a compression check?
Are your valves OK?
