i swapped a 360 for a 460 in my '71 3/4 highboy p/u everything seemed to be ok til i went to pull out of the garage. the clutch wouldn't release after some long lookin i found that the splines aren't long enough on the trans shaft causin the clutch to stay mashed to the flywheel even though the pressure plate is releasin i did check to make sure the clutch released without the trans bein bolted up and it did is there a different clutch i could use? no machine shops in the area can extend the splines and i don't want to just put a spacer in cuz i want to make sure the pilot shaft is in the bushin far enough i'd appreciate any help thanks. vern
are u sure that the bearing in the flywheel just isnt seazing on the shaft? ive had this happen a couple of times, or that the throwout isnt working right... little things like this would do it too
did you grease the throw out bearing and the shaft it rides on? the pilot pushing needs grease as well. what flywheel did you use on the 460 and is the clutch meant for a 460
the clutch disc won't slide all the way to the throwout bearin shaft i was told i could use my 360 flywheel it did bolt right up to crank and was told the balance wouldn't be affected i'm thinking about putting a spacer between tranny and bell housin as long as pilot shaft is in the bushin far enough. whats your thoughts on this it will probably need a 1/2" to 5/8" spacer if i do this
i took the input shaft out of a '79 3/4 ton and put it in my '71 andcut about 1/8" off pilot shaft and it worked like a charm i just didn't have enough splines on the '71 input shaft thanks for your input. vern
are you using a 460 bellhousing, a HD 400 bellhousing or a 351M/LD 400 bellhousing?
They are all different depths.
The HD 400 bellhousing can be used without a spacer, but you HAVE to use a diaphram clutch.
The 351 bellhousing needs a spacer AND an 11" diaphram clutch, and sometime still needs some clearance grinding .
the 360/390 flywheel will bolt to all 460's but will only balance correctly on the older 79-down internal balance engines.
