I just installed a 4 speed trans in my 77 in place of the auto transmission. I now need to know how to wire the transmission so that when I put it into reverse the back up lights come on. Will I have to go inside the sterring column or can I get to the proper wires from another place. Thanks for any help in advance.
there should be a connection right below the shifter on the left(driver side). i think the connector for the auto is different so you may have to splice it or steal one out of a junk yard
Yeah I saw the connector on the transmission, but I am not sure where the proper wires are that I can splice into to get the reverse lights to work. I guess that with a automatic that the reverse contact is in the column somewhere, cause there was nothing on the auto transmission itself that I took out.
i think the connector comes out of the harness thats coming from the dash there on the driver side. it would be easier for you to look at another truck if you knew where one was at
I am not sure how they did it on your year of truck but in my '73 there is a small metal rod that comes out of the bottom of the steering column that the shifter safety switch( the switch that makes sure the truck is in park) and my reverse lights were wired up to.
Since the metal piece broke off I just wired a switch to the wires that the switch were hooked up to and put it in the dash in the blank panel above the headlight and wiper switch.
I don't know if the later '70's trucks had this type of setup or not.
