Hi guys,
F350 4x4 crew DRW
Lately l've been getting a strange vibration
after hitting a small bump. After running over
a bridge expansion joint, manhole cover or anything
small like that, I get a vibration that feels like a road
surface change.
I drive the same route to work each day and some
days it happens and some it doesn't. I first thought
it was road surface but now I've noticed it's not EVERY time.
The vibration seems to be in the rear since it's more in my
feet and seat than in the steering wheel. What should I
start checking? Checked the lugs and the wheels feel solid.
Anybody experienced anything similar?
I had a slight vibration that accompanied a noise that I was trying to eliminate in the rear of my 2000 SD. Turned out to be an exhaust bracket. The drone from the muffler amplified the noise and vibration whenever I went over any small road surface change. There was a TSB that I found that said to retorque all the mounting bolts to the brackets because they might work loose. Sure enough found one that was loose. Now the noise and vibration is gone. It's an easy cheap fix if it the same problem.
This is when you are moving and not under braking?
Yup. While moving. Touching the brakes does not
stop the vibration. It stops on it's own. Sometimes
after a few seconds sometimes as long as 10-15 seconds.
I have a 2005, F250, Crew Cab, short bed, SRW, and I am experiencing the same vibration. The local service department "can find nothing wrong." They contacted Ford Engineering and Engineering said they have had no complaints on this. They are suppose to call me when the Ford service rep comes in, so he can look at it.By accident, the tailgate slipped out of my hand and fell, I found that when the tailgate is dropped the vibration can be duplicated. The entire truck shakes for perhaps 8-10 seconds. It reminds me of hitting a tuning fork.
I'm gonna try that today. But I have a feeling it won't happen
for me. I'm definitely not getting a steady pitch from the vibration.
Noticed today that it only happens on small bumps. Crossed
a couple of nasty railroad tracks this morning that really jolted
the truck and bounced me in my seat but no vibration.
Then, I ran over one of those hoses laid across the road
to count traffic and it happened.
Your vibration sounds exactly like what I had recently---small but very noticable vibration that starts and stops suddenly, usually upon hitting small bumps. It was most noticeable in the floor, felt it with my feet. It ended up being a small needle bearing inside the front hub that supports the end of the axle. After asking for and getting great info here, I pulled the hub and replaced the bearing. Cost less than 10.00 to fix. Could have cost more if the axle had been damaged. Don't let the problem continue for long. If it is that bearing, it will eventually damage the axle. Read the linked thread all the way through.
Thanks Mike,
This definitely looks like it's worth investigating.
You say your simptoms were similar to mine?
I had wondered about bearings but expected they would have
given a much more noticible grind and noise. These secondary
bearings sound like the right way to go.

My vibration symtoms were exactly like yours. Starts/stops based on hitting smallish bumps, even as small as a road reflector. Braking had no effect. Felt most in feet. Did not ever feel in the steering.
The reason the noise and grind isn't much more noticeable is that this bearing only supports the weight of the end of the axle. The main bearing that supports the truck is not replaceable. When that one goes, the entire hub has to be replaced.
If you have ESOF you can switch it to 4x4 high when you feel the vibration, if it immediately stops when 4x4 high is switched on it is most likely the front needle bearing. Had same problem, it will get significantly worse / noticiable over a short period of time and chew up the spindle axle if you let it go to long.
i had the same type of vibe....my abs light came on yesterday and stayed on...pulled over and AAA'd the truck home....got the dynatrac kit on order....
