I'm planing to built my 400 block with a Comp cam 268H and I will use aluminium roller rockers, is it better to use hardened push rod or the stock push rods?
Someone told me that it's better that the push rod bend than breaking the expensive aluminium rockers.
Hardened push rod are normally required with roller rockers. The stock rockers are not adjustable but conversion to roller is. You also need guide plates with rollers and thats why the hardened push rods are needed.
even the hardened push rods will flex some and if your looking for a weak link to save a rocker that is a really bad idea. first off if a pushrod breaks, and the cam shoves the lifter out of the bore there goes your oil preasure and very soon to follow your bearings. Next if either one breaks you have bigger problems than buying a new set of rockers cause something either just bound up or hit the pistons not good in either case.
and if your running enough spring preasure to cause that problem then you need to be running shaft rockers or atleast stainless rockers not alum, and should upgrade to 3/8ths pushrods but thats some serious spring preasure I am running 800lbs of open preasure with alum rockers without problems
Ok thanks for sharing your knowlege. I will use aussie aluminium roller rockers ($159 from mad dog racing on ebay) with hardened push rods and guide plates.
What's the part number for the guide plates?
What is a stud girdle? Have a picture so I can see how it look like?
Well for some reason I can't get into my gallery right now but here is a picture of one on my big block that I have on another website, it's the gold thing above the rockers. http://www.supermotors.org/vehicles/....php?id=207374
I am not sure if a 1" spacer is enough or not with stock valve covers, I ran the 4" motorsport valve covers on my cleveland wtih the Jomar girdles and they just cleared the breather baffles so if you covers are 3" tall, and a 1" spacer they should clear.
just looked again at what cam you are wanting to run, and with Iron heads, and a hyd cam your spring preasures aren't going to be all that high, so stud girdles aren't really a neccesitty more of a braggin rights feel better about it type of thing, All of my race engines use solid roller cams with a LOT more spring preasure and now I am running alum heads so now it's a requirement on my stuff.
