I pulled the original alternator off my '83. 166K on it. The brushes were worn down to the beginnings of the round areas of the brushes... about 1/16" from the springs. This was my alternator fluttering problem. I replaced it, but kept the old one. I put in new brushes, and the front and back bearings were replaced. It runs just fine, but I'll keep it for a spare.
