everytime I do an oil change the parts guys always recommend different kinds. Seems everyone has a preference. I prefer cheap so I go with Walmart brand. All oils have to meet the minimum standards set by the manufacturers right? Personally I think oil is like Jeans. A $50 pair is as good as a $100 pair, you just pay extra for advertizing.
Everyone has the oil they prefer (I don't know how many times I've heard, "I've run all my cars for 40 years on brand x and never blown an engine" - maybe the same would have happened with (cheaper) brand Y). But can anyone tell me if certain oils are better than others, ie should the extra $ be spent?
seems i read something about this a few months ago, but it was comparing the type of oil you should put in a motorcycle. but it had a side note that was like 16 pages that did a basic oil test. the motorcycle test said that for a bike that has a tranny attached and runs off the same oil and the engine than a good synthetic. the other said that oil is oil, and it doenst matter too much, they are all really close. me, i buy the shell stuff, like 1.30 a qt in CA. i put it in both the bike and the truck. just stick to the routine matainence and i wouldnt think that any oil would be better than another.
3000 miles or every 3 months is hard, i do like 6000 miles in a year, do i change it every couple of months to be safe.

i ran my trucks on "cheap" oil for years, changed it regularly and never had any troubles... i just switched to syn oil to try it out... seemed to make a small difference, but it's really hard to tell...
I have run "good" oil and I have run "cheep" oil and can tell no dirrerence. I think 30 years ago there may have been alot of dirrerence in the different oils, but with todays testing and refining I'm not convinced one oil is better than the next.
This is only MY oppinion, and you know what that means!
I tend to agree with you guys. I have heard alot of people swear by a certain kind of ooil but like you said, with 2day's testing...They all have to meet standards right? Only reason I use synthetic in the mustang is that that's all it's ever had.
For what it's worth, I've noticed a big difference when using Synthetic oil during cold weather. Synthetic oil retains it's viscosity in low temperatures, and the engine cranks easier and starts faster than when using regular oil. That's gotta be easier on the starter and charging system also.
