i am guessing it wont work. but it is from maddog racing i think is their name. 80 dollars plus 11 for shipping and it looks like they have awesome feedback so i am not worried about getting ripped off or anything like that
It will work, I bought one a couple of months ago. They sent me a Cat or TMD one instead (only adjust 4.5 degrees adv or retard). had to grind down the shafts (due the diffrence in the blocks between a 351C and a 400 Ford), but for the price I don't mind a little customizing. Maddog racing has alot of cool stuff for our engine at good prices. Full roller rockers pedastal mount so you don't have to convert to studds for around $220. They are who I look for parts from first, cause I'm cheap. People that complain that parts for our engines are expensive either don't know what will work or havent looked hard enough for parts. My 2cents.
Maddog seems to be a good company. Even the helical cut gear drives makes some noise. Remember the cam drive on a 300-6 is a helical gear drive and those engines last a LONG time.
Good point Torque, many claim that gears drives can cause problems because of harmonics. But as you pointed out the inline 6 uses gears and they last forever. I'm happy with mine, and I like how they sound.
Since I noticed you have a built 400, is that the engine you are using them in? If so, exactly how noisy are they. I am wanting to get some that are noisy, but if it is going to be so loud I can't talk to my wife next to me I will probably have to opt for the quiet ones. Thanks for all the imput guys!!
Well the gears went in a couple of weeks ago, and I just got my heads back from power heads about a month ago, and I got my trany back last week and I just dropped my engine in the truck today. Work can so get in the way of my play time! Anyway I took tommorow off to get her all plumbed and I'm still waiting on my pertronix ingnitor II and coil from summit(should be here tommorow from summit) (fingers crossed). So I should find out how noisey they are tommorow, I hope. If not I will have to wait awile cxause I got the next few weekends dedicated to my AA get togethers. Tommorow is a do or die cause I REALY miss driving my truck. I'm driving a 84 Bronco that has a very tired 302 and it gets worse fuel mileage than my built 400. Go figure. You can see pics of my engine in my gallery, and soon the whole package when its all back in my truck, plumbed and running. soon. Thanx for the interest, I'll let you know how the sound.
I ordered the pro comp cause yoy can adjust the timing in 2 degree increments. but Maddog racing ops to substitute a supposed better part if the are out of the particular part you ordered. So I got the Cat/Tmd gear drive. The idler shafts had to be ground down to fit in my block with the proper clearence, but that wasn't a prob. I was suprised at first at how much I had to grind from the shafts, I could have ground the block and ground less, but I didn't feel comfortable doing that and the instructions said to grind the shafts for clearance. Anyway I'm pleased with how they went in, but I'm easy to please.
From looking at other pictures of gear drives, these are beefy! Exspecialy compared to my comp cams timing chain. They are gears (pretty simple devices) so I can't imagine anything going wrong with them. Maybe if the idle gears seazed on the shafts, but that seem unlickely. Like I have said, for the money I paid I'm happy with what I got. I could have paid three times as much and I wouldn't have had to grind them, but I can work a grinder for a couple hundred dollars!
I have a Comp Cams 2121 magnum double roller set and a Comp 268H for my 400. I saw pictures of other double roller sets and they look bigger than the Comp 2121 I have.
Anyone who had troubles using a 2121 Comp timing set?
