I just bought a '99 F150 and I noticed a little looseness/wander in the steering while going down the road. I looked at the steering shaft and have noticed that where the steering shaft connects to the rear of the steering box, the holes have become kind of egg-shaped around the pin causing some slack.
What all do I have to replace to fix this? I am hoping I don't need a whole new steering box. And how does that pin come out??
Gary,
Did you ever find out if the pin comes out? I have the same problem on my 91 aerostar and am trying to rebuild it with one from a 94 and can't figure out if the pin comes out or not. please email me at fndwl@acsalaska.net
Well, what I found out is that the pin was fine and a little slack seems to be built in. I bought a new lower steering shaft and found out that the original was fine. The new shaft has just a bit of flex/slack in it as well and the holes are the same rounded out shape as my old one. Oh well, I guess.
The gearbox is what has the problem and I haven't had the $200+ to replace it yet.
