some of you know of my truck by now. 1980 4X4 dually with a 520 torque 460 motor. do you guys know if a 514 stroker crank would affect smog at all? i already have a problem with smog.
unless they check CID the emissions should be based on external equipment, and emissions out the exhaust, and thats a matter of tune rather than displacement.
Where in the "middle of nowhere" do they have emissions testing? I live less than 40 straight line miles from Seattle and there are no emissions are any teting at all.
in this truck, it originally came with a 400, and the previous owner swapped it with a 460 without taking it to a referee station and getting it checked out. every time i took it to get smogged, they always ask me if its a 400 or a 460. none of them checked it though. it failed smog twice. 1st time it was too rich, 2nd time it was too lean. the metering block is all messed up. i put 4 carbs into 1 and i thought it would work. guess not. Summit wants a new smog legal carb for $280, and i think thats a hella good deal. what do you think?
I think an emissions carb is not the way to go. A good Holley 4 barrel 600 cfm carb with a list number of 1850 will adjust better and you will probably need to retard the initial timing a bit. I used to get my 428CJ to pass with ease with a 406 six-pack on top of the engine and the smog pump disconnected (attually it was gutted. They were looky loos about that sort of thing. Of course all they saw was a big air cleaner. You still didn't say where the "middle of nowhere" is that requires emission testing.
i live in Knightsen, Califorina. a small drinking community with a farming problem. the carb Summit wants is a Holley 600. thats what carb goes on that truck for smog. as soon as i get it to pass smog, my sisters boyfriend is giving me his Edelbrock 750 off his 68` Charger. that 600 is starving my truck, so i think that 750 will be fine
