I think I'm having the same problem mrparle has. I have a 95 Aerostar with the 4 Liter engine. Two hoses on the vacuum disibution block keep blowing off. One of them comes from the transmission. When they blow off, the idle gets very rough and I get a lot of white smoke from the exhaust after the engine idels for a while. There is also a strong smell of transmission fluid. Does it matter how the hoses go on the distribution block? A drawing off the Ford factory CD dosen't make it quite clear?
I have two Aero's, a 94 cargo and a 95 AWD, both have problems with blowing the vaccum lines off of what I call the vaccum tree. I ended up getting one of our teen boys from church who could reach up in there and secure the lines with cable ties on the 95 and I haven't had any more problems with it. My 94 is another story. Problem is I don't know if I have all of the lines attached or not. Do any of you know where I can find out how many hoses are supposed to be connected? Are there any posts that don't have a hose connected to it? I couldn't find a hose for two posts so I capped them off. I am having a lot of problems with this van that I am just living with but they are starting to effect the drivablity of the van. I might just start a new thread to discuss all of them.
<!--StartFragment -->khanthranitar is right, replace tranny vacuum modulator first
Replace at least the vacuum line to the auto tranny modulator. softened from the ATF and will collapse and seal off under downhill partial throttle high vacuum conditions, line will also deteriorate and break down, pieces into engine, not good.
also, may have to replace other vacuum lines if damaged from ATF
should be vacuum line diagram under hood, also check Chilton's
This brings up another question. My transmission was slipping real bad whenever I would put it into Drive. I didn't check the fluid level because I didn't have a puddle in the garage. I stopped by a Tranny shop and he put 2 quarts in. I asked him where the fluid was going and he said that the modulator might be bad. Thing is he said that only half on the 95's have modulators and he didn't know if mine did. He also stated that the fluid would go into the transfer case if the rear seal was bad and I didn't have a modulator. What does a modulator look like so I can see if mine has one? The only thing I know to do is go and buy one and see if I can find one on the tranny.
A4LD auto in most 1995's, only late production has 4R series electronic control with no vaccum modulator
look for round cylinder in right (passenger) side of tranny, has neoprene vacuum line going into it from vacuum tree on plenum.
easy to change. search FTE Aerostar, lots of good descriptions of changing vacuum mod.
A4LD's are sensitive to ATF level, check and fill on level ground only, do NOT overfill. only onto crosshatch.
treat that Aero tranny right, ATF changes every 30k, don't overheat, add an auxilary cooler and it will outlast any Japanese import auto tranny.
if rear bushing and seal are worn and leaking, you will have an oily mess all over the underneath and rear end of your Aero, ATF can not leak from tranny into transfer case, there is an open stubby driveline inbetween, what was that tranny shop mechanic drinking, burnt 100 proof ATF?
also check your engine oil level, may be contaminated with ATF, change oil also.
Well I can say without a doubt that my van doesn't have a transmission modulator. I couldn't see one so I went to the parts store and had him pull one for me to look at so I knew exactly what I was looking for. I climbed back under the van with a flashlight and looked around it and didn't see one.
