Head Unit overheating??

I have a Sony Xplod CDX-M630 head unit in my 78 F100. I have had it for about 4 years with no problems but as of late the close button and volume down buttons will switch, and sometimes the screen will freeze on the inside. Could this be form all teh heat it is generating, or is it starting to go out? It does get extremely hot, but always has. Also i have 2 5 1/4"s on one channel, and 4 6X9's on another channel, could the 4 6x9's be drawing too much and be causing damge?

I agree. Its wearing out. It shouldn't hurt it with the speakers unless you have to low a ohm draw on it. Its rated for 4 ohms & you may be showing it a 2 ohm load with 4 /6x9s.

Haha stay away from Sony unless you plan on spending $600, and then if you do decide to spend that much money get Eclipse lol. Eclipse is the best for headunit's.. I'm saving up right now. I used to have an Eclipse until it got stolen 2 years ago. Anyways, if you're not planning on spending much at all, I'd go with Pioneer or Panasonic. If you want something really nice go with Eclipse, or the high-end Alpines. Sony used to be good, but then they basically took cheap stuff, stuck their name on it and marketed it.

Alpine is what I use 9835 model. It's changed this year to a new model number.

The HU is full of features that will keep you busy for a few weeks just learning to use it. The best features are you can control your amps from the HU, Make corrections for speaker placement, Does not require a EQ since it has it own. It will play DVD's which can hold 1800 MP3's Not that you need that many. You can use folders to make it easy to find them.

You can add a IPOD, TV, DVD player and LCD without buying adaptors with just the add-on box.

That one's not too bad. There's a lot of HU's that are so intriquite within themselves that it takes a long time just to know what your HU can do. I know I'm still learning little things that my Blaupunkt does. Like I can set it to come on to a certain volume, I can have it mute to a certain volume, there's all sorts of time adjustments, and then there's the 7 band EQ which has filters within each EQ level.. the list goes on and on. The little book that came with my HU was 150 pages long. I can't wait to get my Eclipse CD8455 I don't know if I'll ever learn everything it can do, since you can add navigation to it..

Thats one reason I use the Alpine site to make all the settings and then transferr it too the HU Via a burned CD. All those cut off settings and time corrections make my head spin doing in the auto.

Eclipse does the same thing. But with the Eclipse it comes with an SD card so you don't have to burn a CD, but if you decide to, you can still burn a CD.

I've won several SQ contest with a Eclipse HU.I can control my amps from the unit & its got navigation available Eclipse will also clean your HU free for the first 3 yrs. You just pay shipping. $10 It will come back looking & sounding like new.
