Engine Flattening out on grade

Hey Everyone,
I am new to your site. Love all the info on here.
I have a question someone may help me with. Two weeks ago took a trip to
the Frisco area. While climbing a 7 percent grade, about 3/4 to the top,Truck was in 2nd gear about 35 mph when all of a sudden engine dropped rpm's from appox.3000 down to 2200 and engine just flattened out and had no more. My brother was ahead of me in his 2000 f-250 V-10 auto and his did the same thing. He had to manually down shift to first to get more power. I was wondering if anyone had the same kind of thing happen to them and it this normal since both our trucks did the same thing.I was pulling my 13000lb. Fiver.
Truck engine temp was normal and tranny temp was also normal. I have a 2002 F-350 Crewcab Dually V-10 auto trans w/4.30 rearend. Once I reached the top truck picked up speed normally and shifted to third with no problem.Everything looks normal and ran perfect.Any input would be greatly appreciated since I am used to a stick shift truck and I got this truck used 6 months ago and am still learning about it.

it is safe to asume that the rpm drop indecates that the trans upshifted to third, pulling 13k up 7%, I wonder if your cooling fan kicked in fully putting a big load on the engine? do remember dash guages are somewhat of idiot lights with a needle. you may want to consider aftermarket guages for trans and engine.
