Installing a radio...

How do I get the instument panel off the truck so I can get the radio out? I pulled at the edges after taking out the ashtray and ashtray mount. When I pulled the edges they popped out a little... What next? IT is a 1996 ranger

If there is two holes in each side of the radio, it requires a small tool to get the factory radio out. That's the way my 97 Ranger is. Wal-mart has that tool back in the car audio section, and I suspect a lot of other car audio places do too. I replaced the factory radio and speakers in my Ranger, got a conversion kit that included the dash conversion, and the wiring harness plugs to use the original harness. That's OK if your new system isn't going to run a lot of power, but if it is, the stock speaker wires aren't heavy enough.

why waste the money on something you can make yourself. instead of buying the tool to remove the radio, take some wire or an old wire hanger, cut it and bend it into a U. just as good as the tool from wal-mart.

easiest thing to do is buy the tool to do it that way you don't have to cut up a hanger everytime you want to work on a ford radio. trust me i work in car audio istallation. they are call ford audio/radio keys. just slide them in the holes untill you hear a "snap" then pull the radio out. you won't hear the snap with hangers ( or at least i never have)

And if you buy or make the tool, keep it. The conversion kit I have in mine requires the same tool to get the new radio out. Don't know if it came with the kit or not, been too long ago.

you all know how much power factory speakers can take? the new radio pumps out 17 watts RMS x 4 @ 4 ohms. Do I need better speakers? The speaker size is 6"x8". Thanks.. I am more comfortable working on trannies and engines than electrical stuff.. haha...

like HOW loud would be too loud for the factory speakers? My dad has a dB monitor I can use to check it... I am looking at Pioneer speakers for replacements....Pioneer TS-A6870R 6 x 8 Inch 3-Way Speaker for the back and Pioneer TS-A6880R 6 x 8 Inch 4-Way Speakers for the doors... How does that sound? I hafta wait.. Need money for college next fall... haha (At least mom says I do) Oh, the max power for my radio is 52watts x 4

Pioneer 4 ways are awesome speakers. Theres a way around buying the special ford tool. Go the the car audio dept at best buy or something, and tell the guy that you just bought an aftermarket stereo from them but you dont have the tool to get the factory one out. They should pop it out for free of let you use the tool for the 10 seconds that it takes.
