I have a 92 clubwagon with a 5.0 Ltr and 143,000 miles. I've just noticed that she is starting to blow a little blue cloud at startup once in a while if she has been sitting. Does not blow blue at any other time. From reading the good info here I think it is because of worn valve guides. My question is should I be worried about the engine and have it rebuilt or rebuild the heads? Will my engine be good for say another 5 years without damage? I put about 5000 miles on her a year now and don't pull anything or drive hard. Any help is very much appreciated.
it sounds like valve guide seals, its normal and it will problably last forever still. you can istall new seals with the heads on but i would take them off and have a valve job done if you do decide to fix it.
Like smoke n tires says oil is going by the valve stem seals. With that many miles on the engine there's a good possibility that the exhaust valve guides are worn. Replacing the seals with the heads on the motor is a good cheap fix and will usually work but probably only temperary if the guides are worn but may get you by until it's overhaul time. Do a compression test and if the rest of the motor looks good then you may want to consider pulling the heads for a permanent fix.
Thanks for the help guys. The question now is, can I drive her safely for another 4 or 5 years putting on 5 to 6000 miles per year without doing any repairs or should I do the valve seals or heads because of damage?
i dont think that will hurt the motor to bad, its just gonna get worse and use more oil. drive it till it dies, it problably never will. just keep good thicker oil, 10-40, in it.
