tranny I think was still a C6.
t case was Borg-Warner 1356 with a 2.69 low range.
Here is a couple of things too. 1987 featured another major body restyling for the Bronco. The new aero look was in and the Bronco followed suit. The transfer case was replaced by a Borg-Warner 1356 with a 2.69 low range. 4.10 gearing was optional. Touch drive was first offered this year. The 351 HO V-8 was still optional and the 300 CID I-6 recieved Multiport fuel injection (MPI). Rear anitlock brakes were made standard.
1988: Two 5spd manuals, M5OD and M5OD-HD(?) were available. The overdrive was .8 and the HD tranny had a 5.72 first gear. The 351 CID V-8 was treated to MPI. HP increased from 190@3800-210@3800. Torque increased form 295@2600-315@2800. The entire engine line was now fuel injected and also serpentine belt equipped. Transfer case skid plate was now standard.
NP208s were in 80-86. NP205s and 203s were in 78,79s.
OK, I just went an looked again, the one I have is an 85, I thought it was newer but it's not. We just hauled it here from ther pre-owners house and are going to start pulling the motor, tranny an transfer this weekend. Any info I can get on the tranny, etc. would be great.
There was no "M5OD-HD". It was the ZF 5 speed also found in F250 4wd pickups. I have seen a LOT of F150's and Broncos in the junkyards and and have yet to ever actually see one of these supposed optional 5 speeds. They all have the M5's.
I'm pretty sure the AOD's only came behind 5.0's the 4.9's and 5.8's stuck with C6's until the 4R70W's were introduced.
Not to correct you really just some trivial clarifications. Stuff I discovered when I thought of swapping my C6 for an AOD. Come to find out there is no factory application with and AOD and an EFI 4.9. This means there is no source for the all-important AOD "TV" cable other than some aftermarket one that MIGHT be adaptable. Ticks me off.
I hunted the elusive ZF tranny soon after hearing of it. If they exist, they're pretty darn rare. The only used ones I ever found were in 1 ton 460 trucks, cost as much as three good used M5OD's, and wouldn't fit my application anyway. So I gave up on THAT idea.
OK the truck is an 85 model with a 302 EFI, would this be a C6 tranny? and what transfer case would it be? I guess I could wait untill I get it all pulled out to find out for sure.
Thanks for the pervious information.
Maybe I should clarify. A lot of these drivelines overlapped, so it could be an NP 208. The BW 1345 was listed concurrently, but is much more likely to be in mid to later 80's trucks. I have one in my '86. You'll just have to take a picture to let us see. If you have an AOD, you're very likely to have the BW 1345.
Do you know which rear end it has?
Now I'm confused, I though 9"s were used till 86, just like the NP208s(which are all cast alluminum).
But if it has a bolt cover it's a 8.8, or if it's just round with no cover it's a 9".
It's an 8.8 rear end, The dash says P-R-OD-D-1 so it is an AOD? That good, bad or what?
I have a C6 that I can get easy if I want it, but it needs rebuilt so I don't know.. I am completely lost and confused about what I should do and want to do
The AOD and 8.8 rear are a good powertrain - if you want to use it as a daily driver with some off roading, it's fine. If you want to do mostly offroading with some daily driving, you could swap in the C-6. The AOD is not especially expensive to rebuild - you can pick up a rebuilt unit with upgraded O/D band, etc for around 600 on E-bay(plus shipping) maybe a little more locally. My 86 has this same powertrain, and it does fine for me. With the AOD's overdrive, I get around 16 mpg, mixed driving.
You most likely have a BW 1345 transfer case. There was overlap with the introduction of the 8.8, so a few lucky folks got 9" rear axles up to and including '86, but not after.
