Ignition keys

I have a '88 F150 and a '99 Ranger. I would like to re-key the F150 ignition switch to use the same key that I use for my '99 Ranger. I know the Ranger uses a programmable key for security, but it seems to me the '88 should be able to use the same key. They look very similar but the new key won't go in the old switch. Any suggestions????

Hey that's not a bad idea!!! You would probably have to order a new ignition switch which isn't that expensive, and have it rekeyed to the Ranger's key. I think it could be done, you might even be able to get the door looks rekeyed to the same key.

Re key the ignition and then use one side of the key for the 88 and one side for the 99.

Re key the ignition and then use one side of the key for the 88 and one side for the 99.
I'ver done that before and found that I often got the wrong side in the dark.

I can't get the Ranger key to go into the F150 switch. I guess I'll have to see what the locksmith has for ideas. I can always use the convertible's key. I'll post the results after I see the locksmith.

I'm changing the door locks on the F150 to use the same key as the ignition switch. I am using door locks off of a '66 Ford parts car. I hate to use two keys to unlock and then start my car/truck. I just have to figure out how to get the door panels off.

I only see one flaw in your quest to eliminate a key, the chance that one day you may loose that key and somebody getting not one but two vehicles. Or the expense of replacing all of the locks.

I just keep two identical sets of keys. This way no matter what I drive, I always have the right key.

As far as finding the correct side of a key with two different sides I filed a notch in one side. Actually my key is for the same car. It has the '92 Aerostar's door on one side and ignition on the other. Turns out that notch up works both. Can'd do a door/ignition on older Fords (my '90 E350) as the zig zag is reverse on the door compared to the ignition. Supposedly the ignition is at the tip of the key and the door is the rest. Heard of a locksmith who had two Fords and got both card--doors and ignition--all on one key!

Well, I finally visited the lock smith and the '99 Ranger uses "wafers" and not "pins" like the '88 F150 so the two locks can not use the same key.

I was able to switch the door locks and re-key them so the same key opens the door and starts the truck. I used the door locks from a '66 Ford.
