hi, i was wondering where people get their rebuild kits... my brothers locked my 351m up last night and i need to get a kit... im thinking a master rebuild kit
Rebuild kits are a type of "Catch-22" type situation. You will not know what size parts you need until the engine is inspected and sometimes machined. Then you need the parts to actually finish machining the engine. Unfortunately most machine shops count the parts as part of their profit so they do not like to install someone else's parts. They would also have to warranty their work with some sort of off brand parts they did not sell in the first place. For this reason it is best to just buy the parts from the machinist and forget the rebuild kits.
If they locked it up, it could be that you will need a rebuilt-block kit. (made of unobtanium, I believe.) They could have thrown a rod.. into a cylinder wall, or other ingenious destructive things. If so, the block may be toast, and totally unuseable for any sort of rebuild. If you know what happened before it locked up, or if it was leaking all sorts of fluids after it locked up, you would have a better idea of going junkyarding for another block(engine) or using what you have.
Just a thinkin'

i agree with torque1st. the engine needs to be torn apart, inspected and then machined. if you are doing the rebuild yourself the machinist will let you know what size pistons and bearings you will need to do the rebuild properly. i let my machinist put in the cam bearings since i don't have the tools to install them. i usually get my kits from summit. if you don't need pistons they will price you a kit without them. their kits come with fel-pro gaskets and quality rings and bearings. cheers, garsten
I have rebuilt several engines with kits from Northern Auto Parts. They have about the best prices that I have seen and they have well known brands or bearings and rings. On many engines you can upgrade the kits with different cams, pistons, rings and gaskets. They also sell many performance parts too.
I let the machinist get 90% of the parts, total work and parts was around 900$.He even put the bottom end together with no charge. After I got it all together and running I gave the guy 50$.79 460
NAPA, Summit, machine shops are all good sources of parts. If you buy kits from somewhere other than the machine shop, you may want to have the block checked for proper size by the shop before ordering parts. Then order the kit and take it with you to the machine shop for proper fitting. The machine shop I use wants the pistons that are going in the block before final bore so that they can check for proper tolerances and the cam before installing cam bearings.
If you have the block properly fixed (and blue printing is not required) then you can pretty much do what you want, keep in mind your expected usage, rpm, fuel used, towing etc....(for example, you dont want a supercharger and a B/X cam on a boat tow-er)
summit, jegs, heck, even advance autoparts - order 'off the shelf'.
