Warrenville, IL (August 2, 2005) An advanced 4.5-liter V-6 turbo diesel engine, previewed by International Truck and Engine Corporation this week at NTEA, will power the new International® CF Series commercial trucks. The robust International® VT 275 expands the family of “V” engines produced at International Diesel of Alabama in Huntsville, Ala.
Designed specifically for in-city driving, the best-in-class 200-horsepower International® VT 275 diesel features a twin turbocharger – the first of its kind in North America – for fast acceleration in stop-and-go traffic.
Built on the International engine technology platform, the new International® VT 275 engine also utilizes the proven G2 high-pressure common rail fuel system to optimize fuel economy and cooled exhaust gas recirculation to minimize emissions. Fleets will further benefit from a commonality of parts because the International® VT 275 shares many components with the International V-8 engine family.
Now, for the first time, medium duty fleet owners have a domestic choice for lighter duty vehicles. The International® CF Series with theInternational® VT 275 engines expands the company’s product line and provides entry into a new market, serving Class 4 and 5 vocations with a brand fleets know and trust.
“North American fleets with International® engines already in use won’t have a big learning curve with this engine, because of the common technology platforms used in all International engines,” said Tim Cooney, vice president, worldwide sales and marketing for the International Engine Group. “The fact that we are an integrated truck and engine manufacturer helped us to design a package that best meets the needs of this market. We’re building on our 100 years of experience in the commercial truck and diesel engine marketplace to deliver a truck and engine that is engineered to perform.”
Paired with an automatic transmission, the International® VT 275 engine provides smooth shifting. Operators who are not truck drivers by trade will feel they are driving an SUV rather than a medium-duty vehicle. And, with the regulated two-stage setup of the twin turbo, one turbocharger is used for initial startup while the second is used at high peeds, providing fast response the moment the driver steps on the accelerator.
“It used to be, when you were driving behind a truck in traffic you would seemingly sit for minutes waiting for it accelerate at a light,” said Cooney. “That won’t happen with the International® VT 275 in our International® CF Series trucks. The twin turbo technology and drive train matching gets the load moving with the traffic”
The International® VT 275 was designed with efficiency in mind. The G2 fuel system uses higher injection pressure combined with four valves per cylinder to provide performance and fuel economy while lowering emissions, due to more complete mixing of fuel and air for better combustion. This technology ensures precise fuel injection control for a quicker response to driver input, while optimizing fuel consumption.
“The International® VT 275 is a unique, robust engine designed for fuel economy, durability and driver response that the Class 4 and 5 commercial truck market demands,” said Cooney. “The product attributes combined with the outstanding parts and service support that International brings to its customers makes this an attractive American manufactured product.”
BASED on my experience with the vt engines it would be a no brainer I would buy a Isuzu. atleast they are still building a simple dependable diesel engine.
It is a 5.0l isn't it???? I could be wrong though, I had a feeling it was 2 of thier 2.5l 5cylinder diesels bolted together.
And it runs its turbos in parrallel doesn't it? (as in one turbo for each bank of 5 cyl).
The 6.4l will run them sequentially - as in, one behind the other.
Really!!!
That interests me, as you know my father was looking at getting one, but ours is only a 5.0l (we also get a 2.5l 5cyl diesel as well, which is just one bank of the V10) - I searched around VW's Europe websites for thiers, and they only get a 5.0l too.
Maybe you guys got a special edition one?
If so, I wouldn't mind a drive of it! The 5.0l was darn quick (but did suffer from turbo lag a bit). 307hp and 560lbft...
Its a pity that they have all of those issues with them, as otherwise it is darn good vehicle. - also a pity you can't get a manual though.
Just remember, history always repeats itself. I wouldn't wish the first production run of 07's on Sadaam Hussein. The smart money would be on the 08, unless you consider that the 04's seem to have more problems than the 03's did(which the vast majority was c-94's and over-full oil levels). Sure will be fun to read on this site though. Can't wait, it'll be like watching a ball game in slo-mo. Wonder how much $$$ FoMoCo will want for their new toy? And I have to wonder about Ford wanting to stay on top of the other guys. Dodge and Chevy have been touting their "600's" for a couple years, and Ford didn't up the ante with the 05, when they could have easily done so, unless they had survivability issues?

WHATwould be smart by ford is if they went for mpgs and dependablity, and let the others guys fight it out, they already have the best truck so if they focused on building the best engine they could gain there market share back. LET all the people who want race trucks buy cheby and dodge, and people who want a work truck buy fords, buy work I mean a truck that will not let you down, or have a bunch of sensors going out all the time. AND please get the techs up to speed starting now not after the trucks get released, but I guess that is in a perfect world where companies actualy believe quality is JOB ONE!!!!!!!!!
What is the chance that there might be a large dispacement (V-8 of 6.4 liter) and a small dispacement (V-6 of 4.5 liter, already available or a 4.8 liter) diesel available for our trucks?
The 6.4 liters for those that want tire smoken fuel burnen power and the 4.5 (or 4.8) for those of us that wants fuel economy.

IMO...tn mac hit it right on the head!!! FORD should start thinking about the mpgs and dependability over the hp/tq numbers. With what fuel is costing these days...FORD needs to be using the K.I.S.S. method...and going with twin turbo setup and the like. No Way!
I will give credit to FORD for stopping the "Big Block" gaser development engine...and putting those resources towards V6 development. GO FORD...give us more of that "logical" and "practical" thinking.
Fuel is only going to go up...eek! Help us out with a SD PSD/Hybrid...???
