I am thinking of replacing the engine and transmission in my 1995 F-150 4x4 with one from a wrecked 1996. Are there any wiring or computer differences between the 1995 and 1996?
'95 is OBD 1, 96 is OBD II, so you have more sensors and around twice as many pins/wires coming out of the computer on a 96 compared to a 95. The physical parts of the engine should interchange though.
Thanks for the insight, I didn't know they made that switch. So would enough of the wiring from a 96 wreck unplug and switch over to the 95 to make it work easily, or is it more complicated than that?
Thanks
It's way more work and complicated that you could imagine. If you didn't know there was a difference, I'm guessing that you don't understand all the differences between the engines.
If you try this, my guess is that you're going to end up with a huge mess.
Actually, I don't think what you want to do would be that hard.
Putting a '95 engine into a '96 truck would likely be harder, because OBD-II checks lots more things than OBD-I, and you'd have to get them all right to make a '96 truck happy.
Just put the two engines next to each other and start putting the peices from the '95 on the '96, and put the peices from the '96 in a box.
It won't be as easy as doing and OBD-I to OBD-I, but I can't imagine it's a real big deal.
There arent that many things from what ive read but i know that there isnt a MAP sensor on the 96 because it has a MAF sensor...thats the biggest difference that I have found. Im attempting this on my 92...Its mostly just the ECU and harness aswell as the MAF sensor. If you look at the conversion kits thats all they have to them.
