i have a 79 f- 100 with power steering, the steering
column is shot, and the tranny is a c6 with cable shift
from a 78 cougar and i have the column from the cougar
with tilt wheel can i get this to work? if any one can
help ????????????????
measure the diameter of the column at the mount bracket under the dash. if the are close, it should work. the shaft length could be different and the sleeves might need to be interchanged or fabricated. it is not a direct swap but if you wan't it can be done. check all the mesurements first, and unless your a "certified" wel
i don't think the swap is all that feasable. the cougar column is actually a short stubby unit that relies on a very reinforced bracket from the dash to the firewall to mount. the trucks mounted the column at the floor and dash and so they did not reinforce the hanger nearly as much. also on a truck the lower column is exposed but in the car it is not so ford finished the lower column on a truck but in a car all the guts are exposed. i am not saying you can't do it, i am saying it probably is not worth the effort. you can use the cable shifter with a truck column by making sure that the cable is mounted on the shift lever the same distance from the centerline of the column as it is in its stock application. i have done this and it is easy to adapt but you need a very sturdy mount for the cable. a hot tip is reversing the bottom of the column so that the cable comes up from the bottom on the drivers side of the column. you have to cut off the lower column and rotate 180 degrees and weld it back on and then file a new slot in the original lever but then the cable does not have to make a U turn and it works well. hawkrod
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Nov-02 AT 08:25 PM (EST)] I wonder if a column from a late 80's early 90's truck w/ tilt would work.
Keep the cougar floor shift & get a column from a truck w/ a 4 or 5 spd. floor shift. if it'll bolt up, that sounds simple enough...I imagine the wiring harness is different & the ignition switch is in the dash...with a little wiring change, it should work!
