Question Where should my timing be set

OK, So I pretty much rebuilt my 302 out of an '88 f150, all kinds of new stuff on it like a new timing chain and so forth. I have it back together for the most part and it pretty much runs OK...but it sounds like it is a little off time. It is set at 8 BTC right now and it does just OK, about where should it be set for optimum performance? This is my first time doing timing so please be gentle.

10*-12* btdc with spout connector removed. 10 is stock and 12 is a little more pep. anything above that and you run the risk of detonation . some have gone higher with good results. you just have to play with it above 12 and only move in small amounts

Question

But what is the spout connector? where do I find it to disconnect it...someone told me they thought it was the single wire connector up by the coil...were they right and why does that need to be disconnected?

no that is not correct. it is a 2 wire running down by the distributor and has a black plug on the end. removing this is like plugging the vacum advance on a older distributor. it allows you to time the motor without the computer trying to correct it. so when you set the timing the first time its probably wrong or off more then you think. you are using a timing light correct.

Yeah, I have been using a timing light, and obviously will need to redo what I have done after disconnecting that. Thanks again...really.

OK, I went out and looked at the engine, is it a flat plastic plug that looks like it should have three our four wires going into it? If it is, it is already disconnected and now I need to figure out where it is supposed to go. When I put the engine back together I had a plug there that looked like it might go to the optional A/C that is not installed in this truck.

that wire just hangs there and needs a black plastic plug that goes into the end of it to complete the circut. these wires should be close to your TFI plug

no problem. it took me awhile to figure that out myself at first. only remove that when the engine is off. loosen bolt , remove connector, start motor and adjust timing, tighten bolt, recheck timing and then shutdown reconnect spout and drive for awhile so the computer relearns
