Anyone have any experience with these cars? I found a nice one for a decent price, but haven't looked at it, yet. It has a 350 in it. Is there anything to watch out for on the old Caprice cars? I'm looking for a second car so I can start tearing down my Grand Marquis and get into the body work.
Brakes are about the only things to worry about. It's either got a 350 or 400 turbo trans in it. Both are almost indestructable.. As long as it's not rotten, and the interior's fair... Go for it.. They're nice cars.
Wow this post stirrs up memories. My first car was a 78 caprice. It was off the road (not running) more than it was on, but I do miss it. I still have my eye out for another one down the road.
Back in '87, my wife used to take my '77 with our newborn son to Eastern Oregon to visit her sister- about 200 miles one way. Hew new Volvo Wagon stayed in the garage. Reason- the A/C on the Caprice could turn the car meat-locker cold even in 100 degree temps. The Volvo's A/C worked about as well as an ice cube and a fan (had great heated seats though!).
Those are good old cars. I'm just starting resto work on my '77 2dr. They're geared really high and get decent mileage for a full size ride, and overall are one of the most dependable things on the road. Good luck if you get it. BTW, is it 2 or 4dr?
88, if it's a 2-door, I'LL BUY IT!! Love that rear window design, which I think only lasted a couple years. As for ANY '77 full-size Chevy, they're one of the best cars GM ever built.
It's a 2-door for $800. I called the guy, but haven't had a chance to look at it. Was told it originally had a 305, but he put a 350 out of a pickup in it a few months ago. Body and interior are supposed to be in good shape. I'm gonna try to get up there and look at it tomorrow.
Wow, wish I had it. Mine's a rustbucket. I do love that rear glass. Getting harder to find now too. They didn't really build that many. Built VERY few of the 80-87 two doors with the notchback style. 77 thru 79 were the only years for the "fastback" rear glass. I think the grilles are butt-ugly, but the rest of the car has some of the nicest lines of anything in that era.
If you look on the Left-Coast, rust-free examples are still out there. Great cars- and good lookers for the time period. The guy I sold my '77 to (in '87) still has the stoopid thing.
