my 78 f-250 has got a serious brake problem. when you step on the pedal it does nothing but when you let off and pump it again there is brakes and the more you pump the better they get. could this be brake booster leaking. by the way when i shut the truck off i can heara vacumm leak under the hood close to the booster
Fixing the vacuum leak, first a vacuum line could be broken, check all vacuum lines for bad connection and if line is cracked. Then verify if the power booster is leaking. With a set of vice grips squeeze the hose that runs to the power booster and check if you can still hear a vacuum leak. This a quick test to determine if its leaking.
The reason your pedal is going to the floor is you need to replace the brake master cylinder mounted on the power booster.
Other than the vacuum leak, I have the same problem, no braking power at all. I replaced the mas. cyl., both calipers and rear cyl's. Bled them all and still nothin, anyone got an idea?

Did you bench bled the master cylinder off the truck?
Are your brake caliber bleeder valves facing upwards?

A quick way to check for vacuum leak. Grab a needly nose plier, and clamp down with pliers on the vacuum hose running to the brake booster. Verify if vacuum leak doesn't exist or if engine idle increases, both are signs of a bad leaking brake booster. Also have a friend press on brake pedal while you listen to the brake booster for a vacuum leak.

Bench bled m.c. and yes the bleeders are upwards, which is why I attached a hose to the bleeder and pumped till the hose filled with fluid to make sure it didnt suck air back in
In that picture...the 2 bolts is where the mas. cyl connects right? So that adjustment is right behind that then? I think that may be my problem, the pedal goes all the way to the floor, but right before it hits the end of the pedal travel, the brakes begin to stop me. Good thing I'm at school for machining, I'll hafta pull out the calipers tonight and get it in range if it isn't ....thanks a bunch.
The adjustable rod should extend from Master cylinder, Tolerence 0.980 inch to a max. 0.995 inch. Could not see the decimal point on the detail drawing.
