i pulled the rear driveshaft to change a bad ujoint, and about 1 pint of atf came out of the tcase. is this an indication of a problem with my new case, or was it just overfilled??
Usually you get some ATF leaking out of the transfer case extension when you remove the driveshaft and slip yoke. This does not idicate a problem.
Just check that the fluid level in your transfer cas is OK and add some ATF if needed. There is a level indication/fill plug on the transfer case at about the half-way point. Remove it with the end of a 3/8 square ratchet wrench extension and fill to the bottom of the plug.
The ATF was pumped into the tail shaft By the internal Oil Pump. ATF in it is a good Thing . My 1356 didn't have any oil in the tail shaft until I tore it down and replaced the non-working spinning pump.
ok all, thanks. i figured nothing was wrong, but wanted to be sure. 2 months ago when i put it in i filled it with 3 quarts of synthetic atf. when the rear ujoint went, i pulled it and that is when it leaked, but i also noticed that the bottom of the truck is wet from oil slinging . i am assuming this is because i overfilled the case.
Is the Transfer Case leaking from the rear output seal on t-case.
If you need to verify Clean the rear of the transfer case output shaft with a can of brake cleaner and wipe with towel, then verify if t-case rear output seal is leaking.
it came out of the rear seal when i removed the driveshaft. as for the slinging oil, i am assuming that it is coming from around the seal and shaft also. everything else is dry
