My van is a 1990 4 liters AWD.The transmission was fine until I put it away for 3 months in the garage.I got it back on the road this week and now my trans is leaking in the front right side. The strange thing that I don't understand is that if I put it on overdrive,I have alot of white smoke because of the fluide burning on the exhauste pipe but if I put it on drive, the smoke goes away.My transmissions gears change very well (no slipping),I have a cooler on it that is not clogged but the trans becomes very hot......any suggestions please?

I don't have one but it is leaking from the torque...hope this is the write word because I don't know mechanic terms in english. It was streaming at first and now it is just dripping slowly.I had my tranny rebuilt 2 years ago and now it seems to be acting up again. Is there another transmission ( Bronco, explorer) that can fit on my van?
Can you be more specific? The transmission is bolted onto the rear of the engine. Is it leaking at this juction between the engine and the transmission? If so it's leaking through the front pump seal. This can be fixed, and it's not too costly. It is usually caused by not aligning the pump properly when rebuilding the tranny.
But your original post was refering to the front right side of the tranny, and I'm a little confused. Could it be you are refering to the front differential instead? If you are leaking from that, I guess the seal on the shaft is probably busted, but that's not part of your tranny. The oil may look the same because the front differential uses the same fluid as the tranny.
I am sorry about by explainations,I am writing this for my husband that does not speak english. The tranny is loosing its fluide in the front center, between the transmission and the motor.Could it be just the seal or is there something wrong inside of it.
Then it's most likely the transmission front seal. The guy who rebuilt your transmission last time probably didn't do a good job aligning the pump to the case.
copper is most likely right, judging by what you've described. had a similar problem which prompted my first rebuild. as it was described to me there is a bushing that is prone to "walking" away fron the front seal resulting in the streaming of fluid, then as the transmission cools it sucks the bushing back into place making it seem as if the leak is gone or at least less dramatic ...dripping instead of streaming. this may not be the exact case as I haven't pulled mine apart yet, just relaying the info as it was given to me at the time. But, if you can't do the work yourself, make sure a reputable shop does it... preferably one that has experience with the A4LD in particular, mine gave me some trouble after the work was done...nothing major but annoying nonetheless.

[QUOTE=93nighthawk]I would also check the modulator, which is located about there. They have a bad tendancy to go every once in a while.

Too bad, Ford didn't invent a little chime. It goes off, and a mechanical "robot sounding" voice says: "Your Modulator Is Bad" or "Your IAC is Bad" or "Plug wire #4 needs replaced". Well, you get my idea?... Ed

Ford did Ed, it's called onboard engine diagnotic system. It blinks little lights at us or throws "codes" at us, telling that the rig is sick and what is wrong.
Ford's Better Idea?
Does anyone remember the first time the dreaded "Check Engine" light came on in their new pride and joy on a long trip far from a dealership one trusted?

Yeah, I heard you Ed. I had plans for my kids to join the ROTC in college, but that plan has gone out the windows with the first kid. Guess what? He got flat feet, so they don't want him
