All this guitar talk, Tab or Notes???

I had a guitar Tab book with incredible songs from my high school days. We are talking , OZZY-Diary of a madman, Deep Purple-Space Trucking, Alvin Lee-Ten Years After, AC/DC-You Shook Me All Night Long. I took guitar lessons, but Tab was pretty easy, and quick. I plan on picking back up the guitar. However the Tab book was taken by a shipmate back in my Coast Gaurd Days. I still have a Skynyrd, Metallica, and Gun's & Roses's song book, oh, and Niel Young, all with Tab. Just wondering what you guy's read and what song's you have? Not too mention all the Guitar Player Mag's songs that they published with Tab. I must have every published song from 87 to 90. Some things ya just don't throw away!

Well, I use TAB on occasion but it doesn't contain all the nessessary info, so I started to teach myself the notes on the neck of the guitar. I learned to read music up to a point back in High School, so now I can figure something out but mostly I just play by ear. After 30+ years of picking, it's by far the easiest way for me to learn new stuff. I hear it, and I can usually play it.

Tabs are a good starting point for most songs; however you really have to watch them, as many times they are incorrect.

The only problem with Tabs, is that you forget how to read notes if you only look at tabs. That's my problem.

Tabs are generic, they are not always accurate. The best way to advance your skills as a player is to play with someone. Practicing alone will get you stuck in a rut more times than not. When you don't have a buddy to play with, do what I do. Last night I jammed with Eric Clapton and Neil young. Pla along with your CDs.

Also, I have been playing for over thirty years and still occationally take a lesson or two. Well worth the 30 to 40 bucks.

Most important. Practice, listen. One day you will wake up and listen to a song and say.............. "wow, that was a "D" chord and that was an "A" chord". Your ear, just like everything else needs to learn to hear the notes.

Good Luck
