What size drop hitch should I get for my 98 5.4, 4x4, 255/70R16 tires, to successfully tow a double axled trailer without getting the redneck back axle on the ground only look. I will be towing a UHAUL 12X4 double axled box trailer about 700 miles. I know my rig IS the best tow package Ford offered on this year model, so I am not worried about the truck, but I have not towed with it since I got it and my last tow vehicle needed a straight out pullbar to tow a UHAUL.
Wally World has REESE products in Straight, 2, 3 1/4, 5, and 7 I think.
MMMM IM TRYIN TO THINK HOW LOW THAT TRAILER I. MAYBE ID get a 2 or 3 inch drop hitch or you could just measure it from where the trailer is level to how low of a hitch you need to make it level
get 1 2" drop, then for the future you can flip it over (the ball too ofcourse) and have about a 2" rise. that is what we do with our 2 different rigged trailers.
I use the 2 " drop to tow my boat, I think every trailer is a little different. You might want to do this to determine.
With your trailer not attached, crank it to a level point, use a level on the toungue or just eyeball it. Measuer distance from ground to the bottom of the ball.
Then Measuer the distance from the ground to the bottom of the receiver on your Expy.
What is the difference? This will give you a close approximation of what you need. Varying 1" from that will make little to no difference!
If you are going to do much towing (not a 1 time shot), invest in an adjustable hitch. I have a Reese, its big, it's heavy, but it adjusts". I had to flip it over to move it from my '93 Suburban 1500 2WD to put it on the new '05 SC F250 4WD. Had to drop that sucker 6 inches" ! Kind of expensive, but lasts a lifetime. Also allows towing with or without load equalizers. Who knows, you might end up with a 30 foot TT someday, or a big toy hauler.
Dang....You guys must have different trailers than me...It takes a 4" drop to keep my tandem AmeriTrail bassboat trailer level. 2005 Expy XLT 4x4. My 03 Expy took the same drop. My 01 Explorer took a 2" drop to keep the same trailer level.
