diesel excursion

Im going to buy an excursion TODAYto take advantage of the discount. i want a diesel but i was wondering if they were hard to maintain. I wont be towing much but i might tow my sons 2002 mustang once in a while when we go on trips. which excursion would best suite my needs, i really want a diesel, but is maintenence expensive? i heard the oil pan is huge on the engine. give me some comments fellas.

WOW! i just read the crankcase holds 13 quarts thats alot. what is the gas mialege on the diesel excursion compared to the v10 and 5.4 model. can the 5.4 tow a mustang ? what is the life expectancy on these trucks with proper maintenence?

Depends on what your needs are. I have an 2004 Limited 4x4 diesel and love it. Mileage all depends on how you drive it. I am a little lead footed on mine and I average about 13-14 around town. If I slowed up I probably would get better mileage. I took a trip to California a few weeks ago and averaged about 15-16 mpg going 85 MPH. I tow a 8500 Pound travel trailer, mpg decrease to about 11, but I can hardly tell its behind me. The diesel has alot of power. As far as maintenance the diesel takes 15 quarts oil. Fuel and oil filters are easy to change. Don't be bullied by the dealers $ 90.00 oil change and $ 150.00 fuel filter price. You can get the same parts at any car part store and do it your self significantly cheaper. They aren't hard to maintain and with TLC will last a lot longer than a gas motor. My thoughts. Hope it helps.

oh i can do the work my self, hell yesterday i just replaced the lifters on my nissan truck. its just the 15 quarts that make me think damn that oil change will cost alot. and i dont need to tow alot, like i said just my sons mustang once in a while. what kind of mialege does the v10 get in comparison to the 5.4? i think the v10 best suites my needs of a truck that can haul *** and weight. i alos go on 30 hour drives once a year when i go to mexico, my brother in law has a v10 and his has held up to the going to mexico for the past few years. this is going to make an awesome present for me and the wife seeing as we are having our 24 year anniversary today.

I have a 2000 2wd limited v10 I get 13-14 around town it drops to around 11 according to what I am pulling. mostly 7 x 16 enclosed with 4 drag bikes. I pulled my buddy's 2500 extended cab Cummins dodge on 44's on a heavy trailer made for heavy equipment and it only dropped to 9 mpg. not bad in my opinion. DO NOT GET THE V 8 MY BUDDY HAS ONE AND IT CAN HARDLY PULL ITS SELF! compared to the v10 THIS IS MY OPINION PLEASE DONT JUMP ON ME GUY'S THAT HAVE THE V 8. I am pretty sure I read on here the v10 get better gas mileage than the v8. it is all what YOU want I am going to get another one soon and it will probably be a diesel I want the 7.3 so I will be looking for a nice used on I think mid 2003 they ended the 7.3 and started the 6.0 but if I keep reading that they got all the bugs out I might go get the :; last year cry with a 6.0 I just went v10 on my first one because I wanted the 7 TV's the 24" rims and system not the noise and the price was right on the one I found!

I get roughly 8-9 pulling 8000lbs with my v-10 2wd. 15 hwy without trailer. If you drive less then 15K lots of short trips a year the v-10 maybe better for you. But nothing like a diesel in its power range. I have had both and the v-10 suits me better but the diesel is better for all out towing I think. My experiances

PLEASE!!! everybody don't turn into a war PLEASE!!!!!

I get much better gas milage in my Powerstroke 7.3, and it can pull a house if I need it too. And diesels are just getting broke in good at around 100000 miles. Properly maintained a diesel will last a lot longer....

Jose, If it's not too late. I have a 00 diesel X and have 248,000. When I do my own oil change it costs around 40 bucks, but I do it every 5,000 mi too. I do it sooner than what the book says, but with that many miles I want to keep the thing fresh with fluid. I say diesel, I never thought I would want one until I drove this one. It may only be a 7.3 but I will take on any other 7.3 x any day of the week. She's just as strong now as she was with 10,000 miles on her if not more strong. My vote is for diesel!

how often is the oil change neccesary on this diesel vehicles, i was thinking every 3-4thousand like most other cars but it seems you do it after even 5000 synthetic i presume? well i have not gone yet but around 6 i will be going and the diesel is looking to be ahead.

The book says every 6,000 miles. I do not use synthetic. I use Rotella. I think it is 5w40 but not 100 percent sure. I haven't looked at a bottle recently. I just know which one to grab any more. Seems like I do it all the time.

I change oil every 7-9K miles on both diesel vehicles. The X has 146K and the F250 has 197K miles. My oil changes are pretty cheap. $2.99 for the Puralator filter from Sears (bought two cases prior to the $12.99 price jump) and $6.50 per gallon for Rotella T. So for around $30 every 7-9K miles that isn't too bad.
