Hey guys, I have a 2000 V10 4x4, 90k. I've changed the transmission fluid 2 times already with Mercon V. So I start reading the threads about fluid on the forum here. Everything I've read says NO MERCON V. So I start freakn out. What gives? Am I missing something?
Thanks.
I paid $300 to get synthetic oil in my transimssion. I pull a 24' enclosed trailer and also pull older muscle cars on my flatbed trailer. The EX has 106,000 miles. It was changed at 86,000 miles with synthetic and it is still a nice color. It was filthy before it was changed.
Is Ford wrong or what? They told me Mercon V in the trans and transfer. I am going to switch to Amsoil next time but I'm pissed if they gave me **** poor info. Plus, I have 91k and don't want the trans to go boom!
Using MERCON V in your tranny will not cuase it to go boom overnight (as you can clearly see) but it will eventually toast your tranny. I'd change it sooner than later...
Oh...and a 4R100 is a 4R100 no matter what engine sits in front of it.
You would not believe the BS I get from the dealers. 3 outta 4 say Mercon V. No wonder people are having trans problems. Anyway, I used Valvoline DuraBlend ATF. I know its dual purpose but it says: Fluid engineered to meet manufacturer's warranty requirements for General Motors DEXRON® III and Ford MERCON® and MERCON® V specifications. Should that be OK for a few days?
I'm ordering some Amsoil today to change it and the transfercase.
Thanks for your help,
Chris
i use the Royal Purple in the Tranny. It works great!! I pull a lot of weight and it is very hot in south Alabama. I have nothing but great things to say.
Dual rated fluids are NOT to be used in the 4R100 either. Careful with the AMSoil...well...I only say that in case someone is reading this who is still under warranty. I've never read/heard one case where the AMSoil caused a tranny failure due to its dual rated(ness).
However, if the tranny is under warranty then I'd ONLY use MERCON. period.
BTW. when you change it, only put in what you are able to get out. I drained mine and made the bad asumption that the capacity sheet was correct in the manual.
I was so pissed when about a gallon spilled onto the street becuase the book lied. It was off by about two gallons!!.
