hi all
Heres my plan. I have a 77 f-150 w/ a 400. I will be adding the holley 950 commander tbi f.i. unit on it. The thing is I want to add propane on it because of the price and everything(I can get a discount for farm use). Also I like the idea of being able to go as far a my two gas tanks will take me change the computer settings and then go as far as my propane tank will take me. I can't really find a whole lot of info on people doing this. If i can do it it should work out well since with holley you can change timming and fuel maps in a snap. I read some where it seems like propane when it goes through the carb it is at a lot higher pressures(like 200 psi instead of like 8psi) this doesn't seem right to me because how can a carb handle both gas at one time and propane at another with out changeing anything? I should be able to set it up like a unit with propane and a carb shouldn't I. Also I read somewhere propane drys out seals real bad on a carb. Do I need to worry about this with holleys fuel injection unit? Any input is greatly appreciated.
It don't work that way to convert your truck to propane will cost you alot of money and will not save you money it will be more of a PITA then anything else. I owned propane powered trucks and I will never do it agian one you loose power two around here propane isn't much cheaper than gas. You burn more propane per mile compared to gas so you figure it out for all the extra costs you will not see any benefit for atleast 1.5 to 2 years of driving.
You also have to have your heads reground and special valves and valve seats installed you also better hope all your gaskets are in good shape running propane creates lots of leaks.
About 30 years ago, alot of people were putting propane comversons on vehicles because propane was about 1/2 the price of gasoline. As I recall, you lost power and milage, but the price savings made people accept that. When the price of propane started climbing, the conversion kits got real cheep on the second hand market. The only people I know that run propane now is the guy that delivers it.
