thanks for your answers guys. I would like some type of proof on which air intake is better. I've been looking at volant cold intakes. Has anybody installed one on a 04-05 F150 with a 5.4 Engine?
Are some of these intakes louder than others? I would think the open filter must make some noise compared to the closed box system like volant has. Any info would be great, Thanks.
I have the AF1 ('05 SCREW 4x4 5.4 3V Triton) and really like it. Nice, quality piece that I can feel the difference (SOP)....engine seems to rev quicker, is "friskier off the line" and you can feel the diff in power..... not to mention that awesome intake sound sound of the mighty Triton V8 when I'm at WOT. Have about 2000 miles on the AF1 and have never had the CEL light come on either. I also have the Magnaflow SIDO (rear exit) exhaust and the combo really helps this 3v engine to breathe better. Next step is the Custom Tune with the Xcal II - on it's way - can't wait!!
Most of the top CAI's are good units (not cheap) but with this engine it does make a difference to open up the intake and exhaust and let it breathe like it should....was shocked at how restrictive the stock intake is - all in the name of not being able to hear the engine...Ford must think it's going to offend someone....and don't get me started on those ridiculous "sound chambers" hanging off the stock intake tube....those are there to quiet the intake and only serve to disrupt the intake flow......my '01 Lincoln LS V8 sport had those same chambers - first thing we all did was to replace the stock intake assembly with an aftermaket unit from DPG industries - really woke that engine up as well. Good luck on whichever way you go - just don't leave it "choked off stock"!!
The more I looked at the PCV 90, the less I liked it. Went back to the hardware store and looked around a little more. I found a "3 inch qwik-ell", it is shaped just like the pvc 90 but is rubber and comes with the hose clamps. Got it installed this morning and actually looks like it belongs in an engine compartment. I have spent around $20 and have an extra pvc 90 for my next plumbing project.
Got any pics of the project?
Was the "qwik-ell" with plumbing or where can you find it?
It was in the plumbing section near the PVC fittings. It is shaped like a 3" PVC "90" but is black rubber and has the hose clamps on it. You will also need about 10" of 3" schedule 40 PVC to go from the elbow to the hole between the radiator and headlight. A small notch will need to be cut to clear the back corner of the parking light.
I ordered and Airaid MIT and throttle body spacer. I'll also add a K&N filter.
I'll post my impressions after it's installed and I have a little time with it.

Rick - I'd be interested in hearing more about that throttle body spacer you ordered.....I currently have one on order for my '05 Mustang GT and was wondering about one for the truck. How much does it improve performance (any dyno data) and engine drive-a-bility? Also - can you post where you got it and how much?
I went with a Cosmo Racing Air Intake, for $92. Basically, its a steel tube with a K&N cone filter at the end. I installed it and noticed an immediate improvement in performance. I'd guess about 8HP. I started thinking about it though and kept going with it. I went to Pep boys and bought a 3' section of flex tubing, ran the tubing from the end of the steel tube, down through the wheel well protector to the underside of the bumper. Installed a bidet (heat shield) for the filter, and cut a small 3" hole in the underside of the air dam. This put fresh cold air directly in the cone, not hot air from the engine compartment. I finished the hole out with some trim and it looks dam (heehee) good. After doing all of this, the engine performs Awesome. You can buy a cold air RAM intake, but those run about $240. So total cost for me was about $130, and I think it was worth every penny. I did however have to remove the factory air box. So good luck and have fun!
The throttle body spacer is a item you will put in and take out thinking you didn't install it right. It will make a noise you will wish your turck never made. I had one in for a trip around the block and then it was out. Save your money, at least on the airaid spacer.
I went down to the hardware store and bought the pvc tubing and got me a filter. Hooked everything up and the engine dies everytime i start it. Anyone else have this problem? Or what am i doing wrong?
Ok i figured out the problem from another forum but I now have to figure out a way to use the stock air flow sensor. I'm not very willing to drop $200 in a new one. So work in porgress and i'll be sure to post the pics when it comes togeather.
Have you guys seen the DWV intake mod? Here is a link to the thread: DWV intake.
It is an affordable alternative to the AirForce One and the Airaide. Plus it allows you to return to stock in a couple of minutes so you can avoid warranty questions from the dealerships.
I installed an airaid on my 05 scab w/5.4L and the only real deference I noticed is an increase in noise. Its possible that I may be getting a bit more H.P. but this airaid is just way too loud for my taste.
