Hi there, I have a 93 f350 crew, my speedo is acting eraticaly (20 to 140 to 70...) Just wondering if it would be the sending unit on the rear axle or is it somewhere else. i put a new sensor on the axle, didn't help
sounds like the speedo is acting up. in the same year the taurus, explorer and ranger had the same problem. Can you make it act up by thumping the dash while driving? If so it is your speedo.
from what I have read here, sometimes it gets metal filings on it from the wearing of the rear axle, so all the needs to be done is pull the sender out of the axle and clean it. Worth a try.
well in this case he said" i put a new sensor on the axle, didn't help" so I dont think that is the trouble. If you thump the dash sometimes it will cause the speedo to start jumping around especially if you are going around 40-50 MPH. That is my experience from working at a Ford dealership for 11 years.
there has been mention of the wiring harness from the sender going bad as well, but generally jumping speedo is more in the dash, kinda odd on an electronic unit, but if the power isn't smooth and consistent, it will do such...
like I posted above, Ford had a speedo problem from 92-94 with certain vehicles those included Taurus, F150, Ranger and Explorer. I am not sure why but there was I think a Ford Special Service Message or Technical Service Bulletin about this but it was never recall. I found the quickest way to verify and test was to do a test drive and get to 40-50 MPH and thump the dash which usually caused the needle to start jumping around. If not then it was another problem that I would go after.
mine did that when i first bought the truck and it was a bent pinion shaft didn't know it until i hooked to the stock trailer for the first time and it let loose the whole axle was trashed luckily the warrenty covered most of it
