Just thinking I should use 2 of those compressed gas units to hold up my '49 f-1 hood..so, which ones work to replace the dual spring hinges?? Tried Dodge van tailgate & WAY too strong!! Thoughts??
On my 56, I have changed my hood to tilt forward and use gas struts to hold it up. I used a pair I bought at Pep Boys. They seem to be perfect for the weight. They are Sachs Stabilus p/n #SG126002.
There is a photo of my setup in my gallery album "Tilt Front Hood".
I did a post on this not too long ago. The gas shocks are nice, but I couldn't figure out where to mount them (I'm still using the stock opening hood method). What I did is use a 3/4" PVC pipe, cut the length I needed and I simply put in place where the hood pin comes down. The pin taper fits nicely in the PVC pipe. The other end, I made a slot about 1/2" deep on the other end. That end I simply put on the radiator grill cover edge (just in front of the radiator). It won't move even in heavy wind. I painted it black so it doesn't stand out too much. Works great for my application. I'll get a few pics in gallery.
