Air Conditioner Problem ( A/C )

I have a '96 Ford Ranger 4cyl. The other day i started my truck and it started making an aweful squeeling noise. The a/c was engaged so I turned it off. The noise stopped. I opened the hood to take a look, and everything looked normal. I decided to try the air again. The same squeeling noise started again and the compressor would never engage. The clutch would try to engage the compressor every few seconds and the squeeling noise was only there when it tried to engage. Any ideas? I don't know if the compressor is locked up or if I am just low on freon. Help me please!! It's hot!

Definitely sounds like your compressor is locked up. If the system was low on freon then the compressor would not engage due to a low pressure switch in the system.

Your system could still be low on freon charge. As soon as the compressor tries to run, the pressure will drop on the suction side, and if this pressure is too low, the low pressure switch will open, making the compressor cycle on, and back off quickly. As for the noise, check your belt, and tensioner.....
