Unhappy Drive Shaft - Repair or Replace?

I own a 1989 F150 4x4 with a 300 IL6 and 4 speed manual. I have been having a slight vibration at 55-65 mph on the road. I took the shaft in to get it balanced and the mechanic said that he could balance it but couldn't make it perfect due to some play in the slip yoke.

I was told that to rebalance it, it'd run about $35. To recore the slip yoke it'd be roughly $150. However, he said that the long cantilever on the slip yoke would eventually result in problems in the future. He then suggested that i get the sleve for the slip yoke extended to reduce the cantilever. That'd cost $200+.

My question is, what would you all recomend? I'm thinking for $150 to $200 I could almost buy an entirely new driveshaft. Any suggestions? Also would you recomend any type of driveshaft?

Um get a new shaft, My buddy had one custom made for his chevy, it was a short box 1500 with 6" of suspension lift, the shaft was about 1 1/2" to short, it cost him a little ofe 300, the majority of the price bing the slip yoke at 120, bran new, and the two yokes at the end, and labor. personlay i would get a new one.

Thanks

Ok, thanks. I will probably have it balanced first and see if that solves the vibration. If not, I'll look at getting a new one. Thanks,

Pat

Why not just got to the junkyard and try to find the same one? If the truck is the same type (ie 150-250-350), same wheel base (look at doorjam sticker for WB), and match drivetrains (4wd or 2wd), you should have the same shaft. An entirely new shaft is expensive. I think the one for my 1 ton dodge was $450. The best thing about these trucks is that so many of them were made that you can easily find parts. At any junkyard I bet you'll find more F-series trucks than anything else, simply because there's more F-series made then anything else out there.
