Correct Oil for Trannies/diffs

Now that I have my heating, fuel and starting problems fixed I want to go do some hiking and camping in Wyoming......But first, I figured a switch out of the drivetrain oils would do some good.....what is the proper weight oil for a np435 tranny and np205 t-fer case.....as well as my DANA 44 and 60 axles? Should I remove the diff. covers to drain the oil and replace the gasket while there?

I put in the front, rear axles, tranfer case NP 205, gear oil 80w90. I'm not sure on the np435.

80/90w is what to go with. As far as replacing the gaskets on the diff covers, if they are not leaking I would pump out the old oil and refill.

So, that is 80/90w in all?? Just pump it out with the drill pump (Diffs.) or use the drain plug (Tranny/T-fer case) and then refill until it is at the bottom edge of the fill hole, right?

Yes, pump out the diffs and drain plugs in the trans and trnsfercase. Refill the the edge of the fill hole. You got it.

The recommended oil for the NP 435 was 50w motor oil, don't remember if there was temp requirement for a different weight.

Dana 44 (front) 3 3/4 pints, Dana 60: 6 pints, gear oil.
NP 435 6 3/4 pints of SAE 50 engine oil.
This is from my '72 shop manual.

80W90 for NP205 Transfer Case and T-18 Transmission

80W90 is the correct gear oil for np 205 t-case.

You can check out these other links, and see what they say.

http://www.jeepland.net/tcase.shtml

http://www.4wheelingplus.com/tcase.asp

http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-...rans/trans.htm

I used a synthetic on my transfer case and transmission, it seems to run quiter.

I'm just going by what Ford recommended when they built the thing, but it probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference, although one might run quieter than the other in the cold weather. Or go to a synthetic in everything so you don't have to buy more than one type of lube oil. FWIW

I checked my buddies owner manual, It's a 1978 Ford F150 Ranger Owner Manual which came from the factory in the glove box. It also recommends 85W90 gear oil for the manual transmission and transfer case. The transfer case is a New Process 205 (NP205).
