As a spin-off to the Ozzy thread, who do you think are the 5 most talented guitar players in history. Not influential, talented. Original. Un-reproduceable. For me, in no real order, they would be:
1. Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy)
2. Chet atkins (country)
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Robert Johnson (20s blues), even above BB King
5. Stevie Ray Vaughn
It's hard not to include Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Lindsay Buckingham or Jimmy Page, but who could you de-rate to put them in?
I'd have to say my cousin, Bill Piburn, and Chet Atkins.. My cousin was taught by Bill Piburn (which Chet Atkins said is the best guitar player, teacher, and arranger) to play guitar. My cousin is as good as or better than him, they could sit and play riffs back and forth just copying what each other had played and then add a little to it.
1.Tom Morello is one of the best. I dont think too many people can play a tom morello solo, especially the ones from most Rage Against the Machine songs. I'm a big Rage against the Machine fan. Audioslave is pretty good too.
2. Jimi Hendrix. IMHO the best guitar player there ever was. Tought himself how to play a guitar, let alone a right handed guitar up-side down (he was left handed). He could play completely out of tune and still make it sound great.
3. Jimi Page. One of the best guitar players.
4. Santana is pretty good
5. Alvin Lee. Great Rock N Roll guitarist. His song "I'm Goin Home" is great. a great combo of rock and blues. It was a great performence at Woodstock in '69. (I have the Woodstock movie/documentery {sp?}
6. Kirk Hemmet from Metallica. He's a great guitarist also.
7. George Thorogood. He's one of the best slide guitarist i think. His song "1 bourbon, 1 scotch, 1 beer" is my theme song.
8. The guy from Montly Crue is pretty good, I dont know his name though. "Girls girls girls..."
OK, I think I've come up with three contenders not listed so far. if you're not familiar with these guys and you like rock guitar, you better check them out.
John Petrucci (probably the best player in a prog rock band you can see today
)
Gary Moore (one of my unsung heros. People know him, just not to the level he should be recognized in my opinion)
Neal Schon-Yeah, the guy from Journey! but, he was asked to play with Santana and Clapton at the age of 16. there's no denying his incredible talent. check out some of his stuff that didn't make the radio...Some of the non-radio tunes from later Journey albums show some incredibly talented and mature guitar work if you're in more of a chilling mode.
