HEY everone i just had to shar the news i just bot a 1996 12 valve cummins engine to put into my truck so im hope over the next monthe or two all be running cummins power in the trusty ford.
1990 F250 diesel 4X4 soon to be cummins power i cant wait yee haw
I've got a 93 5.9 Cummins industrial in my current 86 F-250 4x4. While it does a good job, there are some things I liked better with the 6.9 I had in my 84 F-250 4x4. My 86 is a C-6, 4:10's with a gearvendor od. Even with the od it's too short legged. The Cummins turns 2500 rpm and thats 78 mph in overdrive....ugh. It needs to be about 1,000 rpm less at that speed. My 84 had a 4sp and I think 3:55's, ATS turbo w/3" exhaust and the IP was rebuilt and turned up. Plenty of power, did not build heat much faster than without the turbo and it got 18 mpg with a 9.5 ft older, heavy camper, pulling a 21' SunRunner cuddy cabin. 24 mpg empty on the open road.
My 86 gets 15.7 mpg, empty, on the open road. It would do much better with longer legs. I don't have to ever go out of overdrive though. Even with my 27' fifth wheel, I can pull the hills around here in 3rd and overdrive. 4:10's would be ok if I had a 5 or 6 sp. along with the gear vendor. Just about any gearing change I've looked into is going run a minimum of $3,000 unless I just change ring and pinion which I really don't want to do because of the auto trans.
