What about installing a switch with a wrning light on the dash to engage 4wd.
Most of us know when we need it and not. Wadaya think?

Many threads of lengthy discusions on why it would not. The short version is that power is always going to all four wheels on the AWD model (hence the name.) The module under the seat controls how much power is going to the front wheels. Under normal conditions it runs roughly 30/70, (F/R) but if the under seat box detects slippage, it causes the transfer case to change gears so it is a 50/50 split of power.
It is not an old fashion transfer case where you have 2H, 4H, 4L, that you select (or the computer.) The only way to do so would be to replace it with a transfer case out of a Ranger/Explorer, which I have not heard of being done, yet.
You should be able to put a switch on the dash to manually control the t-case clutch though. I was thinking about a 3-position rotary switch (like the 4WD switch in the Ranger) to go from Open/Auto/Lock.
