this a common problem. let it sit over night and see how it reads in the am .it will for sure start reading better in a few hours.
always when filling make sure the motor and key are turned off .
I have an F-350 with 81k on it. She has a 7.3 PSD that I never turn off while refueling. Usually takes 10-15 minutes for the gauge to read "F" again.
I think mine has done it once. What mine does every time is when I fill it it goes to above the F. Then it is over 100 miles before it starts down. Then it is suddenly on 3/4. Really a false sense of good fuel mileage. It does get 17 in town though. 2002 F250 CC SB 4X4 7.3 PSD.
Good news is after three fill ups, the fuel gauge seems fine, the bad news is the overhead computer "Miles To Empty" is now all over the place. It used to be accurate. Looks like another trip to the service department. I wonder if something just needs to be "reset" since they replaced the cluster?
After filling mine to the brim the gauge made it first quest for empty in the trucks life. It reset to full in 3 minutes. Hopefully it won't happen again.
I took my 04 PSD w/12,00mi to the dealer for a fuel guage problem. The guage would get stuck 1/2 tank and stay there until the tank was almost empty then the guage pointer would adjust itself. The computer (miles to empty) seemed to be accurate though. The dealer replaced the fuel pump/sending unit and the problem is still there. But now the "low fuel warning" light doesn't come on when when fuel gets low. Back to the dealer I go! Probably the instrument cluster. I hope they don't screw up my dash. It doesn't squeak/rattle at all now, we'll see about it after.
