JL Audio "slash" AMP

I have had great sound systems in all my trucks. In my present truck, I have a Alpine single CD head unit, 4 MB Quart speakers in the doors, and JL Audio stealth box with a 10"w3 sub. and a Alpine 5 channel amp. Back in November my amp went to heck. There was just a loud squelch sound and that's it. I braught it back to where I baught it and they sent it to Alpine to get repaired. Alpine repaired it for a cost of $187. The amp was 37 months old. 1 month past factory warranty. When I got it back it worked great for a bit then I would get a intermitent sizzle rasp noise out of the speakers when I used the turn signals or applied the brakes. This would happen 3-4 times and would only happen every few weeks. The amp went back to alpine and no problem was discovered. So be it. Been good for a while. Now the other day the original very loud squelch noise it back and Alpine will fix it no charge only if it the exact problem as before. I was informed by my sales guy that he has seen amps do this before and are forever having to be sent back. He is a stand up guy and owns a great company. I believe in customer and sompany loyalty. He is will to work with me in any way needed.

OK so here it is. He reccomends dumping the alpine amp fearing problem after problem. Alpine actaully stopped making 5 channel amps. So he carries JL Audio amps. He reccomends the "slash" amp. More power and will be awesome on my system. The problem is its $925 installed. He thinks the smaller JL Audio 5 channel amp might work but there could be problems with long playing and the sub cutting out on thermal. The reason is because the sub is 3 ohms and the amp is not rated for anything under 4 ohms. That amp is $500 installed. The final option would be to have 2 amps. A 4 channel for the speakers and a dedicated sub amp.

So is the "slash" amp worth $925 or not.

input needed

Thanks

Well just to help clarify some things for you. Both the amps you are looking at are in the slash category (/). I had alpine amps (a sub and mid/high amp) about 4 years ago and dumped them both after they took a dive. I did not even want to get them fixed. I went with Jl and have never looked back. I have had 250/1, 500/1 and 300/4 in the past. I currently have 1000/1 and 300/4 and love them to pieces. They are great amps!!! As for your question in regards to the 5 channel 500/5. I have heard good things about them. all of the JL slash series amps are 1.5-4 ohm stable so you will be fine. This 500/5 amp will work great with your mb quarts and jl sub with plenty of power left over. It is designed to give you a great frontal sound stage with some nice fill in rear power. It sounds like you have a great dealer so since they are jl authorized resellers then I am sure that they will assist you if problems show up. I have always been happy with 2 seperate amps for their own needs. Feel free to check out Jl's website for all the info, tutorials and charts needed. http://www.jlaudio.com/amps/index.html

I hope I helped and good luck.

anything with jl name on it is awsome.... but punch amps are much better... expecially the old school ones, punch amps have a birth certificate that tell exactly what that one amp puts out

I would perfer Cadence. BEST amps out there and ALOT less than JL. JL is good but too expensive. Cadence is under rated i lil and best price as well. Email me if you would like i have pics of Cadence amps and the ones i use. And in your case the Z6000 would be the BEST for your needs.
The Z6000 is actually a 6 channel amp and is 75x5 at 4 ohm and 400x1 at 2 ohm.
Its amp im using. Email me for pics and more specs.

Well I took the plunge. Getting the super duper cure all the world's problems amp. $850 plus $75 installation, so $925 and they are going to send the alpine amp back to them and have it fixed for free and sell it in the store as a floor item. So I should get some money back from that to lessen the pain of spending almost a grand on a amplifier in my pick-up truck.

It hurts to plunge the money down but it will be all worth it when you listen to the first song with your new amp. Congrats.

Well I got it installed yesterday. Man what a difference. The speakers sound a touch better with the amp, but the sub is a entirely different. It is louder, has more bass, is more punchy, and more clear. I still struggle with $925 but the quality is unmatched.
