First of all, I need to give thanks out to everyone for helping me figure out what I had, especially to 85e150six4mtod!
I just finished installing an old Ranger splitter in my 77'. I was able to get the pickup out on the road last night to see how much of a difference it would make on the highway and was pleasantly surprised. At 75 mph with 4:11 gears, the motor was pushing 3000 rpm. After installing the overdrive, I can shift into high gear and the rpms drop to about 2200. This should help a bit with gas mileage.
I have run two tanks of gas after completing the install of the Ranger Splitter and I have gained about 2.5 mpg on the first tank and 3 mpg on the second tank.
One question I have regards the amount of fluid that I need in the unit. It has three plugs in the side, one in the pan, one approx. 1/4 way up and the third at about 1/2 way up. Would you all think that the top would be a fill hole, the middle would be the level that the oil should be filled to and the bottom is the drain plug?
I have one of these, but have not installed it yet so I don't know about the fluid level. How is the noise level? Is it any louder than the transmission? Does it shift smooth?
When using the ranger as a true gear splitter the whine is a little louder than the transmission. You can hear the whine get louder as the rpms go up. When I use it like an overdrive, I have to really listen to hear any difference. This could be because of worn bearings in my ranger and a new one may not be as noticable. As far as shifting goes, it shifts as easily as the transmission does.
