Last monday the wife and I loaded the camper (3500lbs) in the '84 F250 Supercab with stock 460 and C6 and hooked the dual axle quad tottin' trailer behind and headed for the mountains for some trail riding for 5 days. About an hour down the road suddenly the temp started climbing and there seemed to be a little rattle (pinging) from the engine. Stopped and check every thing and with it idling the temp returned to normal. Started down the road and it did it again. Me thinks "the timing is too far advanced?" Pulled the ported vacuum hose off and plugged it (I know it isn't necessary but I did anyway). Temp stayed normal for rest of trip. While there pulled the vacuum advance and the damn spring was broken, allowing extra advance. Replaced it and all ok again. The question, has anyone every had this happen?
well, im wondering if its not the problem with my 460.....check this out, i just did a mild overhaul on my 460 (all new gaskets and timing chain), and now i cant hook up any vacuum, ported or unported, without the engine dying when vacuum hits the vacuum advance...used to be i had it hooked to a direct port of the manifold because i had no ported vacuum on the carb, it worked fine that way before i did this work, but my timing chain was so loose you could wiggle the cam a 1/8th inch so i figured the constant advance was making up for it........well once i got the motor back together i tried hooking it up to the same manifold vacuum, and it killed it instantly.....so i figure i need a ported vacuum now, so today i tear into my holley and change the metering block for one that has a ported vacuum thinking this will solve my problem.....no such luck, i can hook it up, but as soon as i hit the gas it spits and dies....maybe i have a broken spring too, which spring did you replace bear?? im gonna hafta look into this further now, cause mine has been running hot like yours did, for years and ive lost my mind trying to figure it out.......do you think that a broke spring would let it over advance at idle or part throttle??? i guess its possible huh?? oh, sorry, i didnt mean to jack the thread on ya!!
Good info Bear. I never would have thought of that spring breaking but that could destroy an engine pretty quick if you weren't careful. Glad to hear you got it taken care of.
a new modulator was the answer for me as well.....only my spring wasnt broke from what i could tell, it seemed a little easy to push though...so i went to pull-a-part and found one on a 460 in an old lincoln, it had alot more tension than mine, so i got it for 3 bucks plus the 1 dollar entry fee, so 4 bucks and i was on my way....hooked it up, put the hose on the ported vacuum on the carb and waalaaaa!!! it worked!! now i just gotta fine tune the holley and the timing, then she is ready to haul the boat to the lake for the 4th!! thanx for the info, i probably would have overlooked it otherwise since the diaphram in the module was good, but since the spring was weak it was over advancing alot....BTW, do you know how many turns for the advance adjustment?? i did it by eye but there might be a better way....thanx......
because it is advancing too far and overheating my engine.
How do you know the timing is causing this overheat? How much initial advance do you have? How much total mechanical advance do you have? How much vacuum advance do you have? Are you getting pinging or engine knock? These questions need to be answered before buying anything. Did this overheat come on suddenly of over a long period of time?
sorry about the thread hijack. It came on after bumping the dizzy, but yes it did happen suddenly. I never drive my truck very far like 10 miles max. I am now in the desert of socal and it will start overheating within 20 mins. when I shut it off the temp will rise to 250 deg. I put a hd 180 deg t-stat and it will still run at 220+ and will go to 230 or more at highway speed.
Well if you ever find the answer let me know. My 77 460 has always ran hot I have tried everything. I finally gave up and just figure its the nature of the beast. After 220K of SoCal desert driving its still running strong so I quit worrying about it.

When you shut an engine off, any engines temp will rise. Why, because the coolant is not circulating anymore so you get a temp increase. Completely normal. But to blame an overheat problem on the dist. without checking to see if it is working properly or not makes no sense. For one thing, is the engine really getting hot (I have an infared sensor that I check engine temps with) or has the gauge gone south, or the sender? Troubleshoot the thing. Hi-jack be damned, let's get you to fix you truck.
Well, my coolant will boil out and my fuel will boil and the engine is so hot that I can't touch the dizzy. It will lose all kinds of power after getting hot. I was lost so I just started buying and replacing the less expensive stuff first.
